[edit]

A major criticism of the tech demos of Unreal 5 shown to date is that they have not yet demonstrated how foliage and general plant models will work with Nanite. Epic has stated they are still working on this but have not revealed anything as far as I am aware.[1]

Another criticism of Unreal 5 has been the unexpectedly high single-core CPU use when running UE5 tech demos on PC. The engine seems to heavily rely on a single core to run most of its processes instead of spreading it out efficiently on other cores of the CPU. If this ends up being systemic to the engine, it may substantially limit performance on future PC games made with UE5.[2]

A final criticism is actually to do with Unreal Engine 4 and its rampant issue on PC of stuttering caused by shader compilation. UE4 is notorious for its particularly egregious stuttering problems, especially in more recent games made on the engine.[3] This issue has not been addressed by Epic and it is still unknown if it will continue to be an issue for PC gamers with UE5.
