Additions and Removals of Remixed Artists

  • Added various artists in accordance with listings at backsideoftheorb/Lazlo's Discography.
  • Removed Robbie Williams as it was a collaboration for Charity CD.
  • Removed Art of Noise(Ambient Collection is credited solely to Youth).
  • Removed Tape Beatles(Status unproven, but not listed anywhere).
  • Removed Pink Floyd(Supposed remix albums aren't by the Orb).

It looks like you didn't actually remove AoN from the list. The Ambient Collection is a DJ mix consisting of various soft AoN tracks on the China label played pretty much end-to-end, but with environmental noises overdubbed as segues. It also included "Art of Love", a new downtempo/balearic pastiche of samples from older AoN tracks. This song, as well as the album, was mixed by Youth, and "the DJ was The Orb". It's not clear what that really means. — mjb 19:27, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
Ooops. My copy of the CD is lacking the front insert, so I'll concede that and leave it as is. The Orb isn't mentioned on the back sleeve, only "compiled and remixed by Youth". Stx 19:58, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Proposed merge with U.F.Orb

It has been suggested that U.F.Orb be merged into The Orb. I disagree with that proposal. U.F.Orb is an album in it's own right and I think it deserves it's own page. - N (talk) 05:06, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Since other albums from more famous artists get their own page, it seems only fair to grant U.F.Orb its own page. User:DavinPearson
I disagree also. Andy Mabbett 21:29, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
I also do not think that it's fitting to delete this article. Furthermore, I think it would be a nice project to fill in the blanks on all Orb studio releases. Jae Moreland 04:38, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
I agree... the album should have its own page. I'll expand it a bit. Gflores Talk 08:06, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
I'll also add a vote for keeping it as a separate album page of it's own. --40 Watt 17:32, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

I disagree with the merge as well, same reason as DavinPearson, who proposed the merge anyway? --Zephirum 17:12, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

I have removed the tag. The article has been tagged since 12 November 2005 and this talk page clearly shows consensus to keep as is. - N (talk) 02:09, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

that page is worth deleting.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.106.113.61 (talkcontribs)

  • Clearly the articles are not going to be merged or anything, so I'm pretty sure this particular discussion is concluded. Wickethewok 15:10, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

U.F.Orb is an ambient house album by The Orb. It is arguably their finest album and follows in the tradition of studio trickery established by The Beatles' Revolver and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

WTF???? established by the beatles ??? pink floydd ??????

this is ludicrous.... what about the first real sound designers as in pierre henry etc..., surely king tubby more than the beatles?

Albums like Revolver and Dark Side of the Moon brought the notion of "the studio as an instrument" into the mainstream, so he has a valid point.

Kris Weston

Kris Weston, a former member of the band, complained to us that our article about him is full of errors. If so, it should be fixed as soon as possible. Could any of you people help me check every fact given in the article? Please help me make it as reliable and sourced as possible.Ausir 15:39, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Well for a start why doesn't he come onto the talk page and voice his concerns? I presume that a king of sequencing has a computer! --kingboyk 14:03, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Thrash can complain all he wants but unless he wants to contribute he isn't going to get results. He is a very dangerous person to even speak to. He has a way with manipulation (as is evidenced by your "my friend has this problem" approach).169.132.18.249 (talk) 00:43, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

whaat the f&^%$ ? so these innacuracies are wikipedias way of getting at me yeh ? wow your website is really f*$&#$% low, worse than even i thought. its not only my article that is full of errors, this one is too, you are so far off the mark its funny! but then a new documentary is being made now and im appearing in it, so you are going to have to change it all anyway when you find out the facts. lulz. beeches. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.230.169.83 (talk) 23:26, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Is it the Orb or The Orb?

Is there a definitive answer as to the name of the group? I see it written both ways in the main article. The group's official web site isn't much help; they use all lower case in many instances.

I just did some AR's edits on MusicBrainz for the System 7 artist entry there. On the vinyls I own, the credits are always written as "The Orb" (example for A cool dry place, track 2 of the 777 album: Produced by Steve Hillage & The Orb ... Mixed by The Orb). --Schika 03:38, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

it was actually 'orb' but no press person would ever leave the 'the' out so we gave up trying to tell people. so you are media scum now. use your own interpretation everyone else does! (see us media)

It's a GA now - that must be cool. LuciferMorgan 02:58, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Clean-up

I'm not sure whether I was the one who originally placed the template, but I're replaced it, because the artiucle needs to be pulled together; at the moment it's very bitty, a string of very short, often one-sentence paragraphs. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:16, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

During the cleanup, if somebody can make sense of the personnel timeline that would be very helpful --Ear1grey 17:09, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Sources?

  • I'd like to improve this article a good deal. Something that would be really awesome, is if people could post a bunch of links here for reliable sources of information regarding The Orb (not reviews preferably). For example, where did the UK chart rankings come from? If anyone could post links to music magazine articles/scans of magazine articles regarding The Orb, that'd be great. Thanks! Wickethewok 14:09, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Pink Floyd?

1)Can someone help with this issue: Pink Floyd Supposed remix albums aren't by the Orb. I have a remix (ehr, d/l from p2p) of Echoes (that is simply great, imho), but I havent found yet who made it. 2)Please someone can explain the following sentence: The album reached number six in the UK, but critics hated it, even comparing Paterson to Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett.--Doktor Who 14:50, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, comparing Paterson to Syd seems like POV. Unless someone can source it Caleb 16:42, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Anyway, I meant only to state that Barrett was a sort of "mad genius", instead Dr Paterson looks a sort of "lucid genius" to me.--Doktor Who 19:20, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Genres

The list of genres seems too long. Can we just write Electronic music and nothing else? --Doktor Who 19:20, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Article reworking

I've started working on this article with the intent of getting up to GA and hopefully FA eventually. If anyone has any sources of information they'd like to share, please drop them here for me. I'm maintaining a rough copy here and will be making periodic updates to this article as I work. If anyone would like to do some serious collaboration, please don't hesitate to contact me. Otherwise, I'll assume no one particularly minds me "commandeering" this article ;-) or at least leading the editing of this page. Cheers! Wickethewok 20:45, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It's starting to look real nice mate, kudos to you.
I wish I hadn't thrown away all my old music mags now! If I remember I'll try and get hold of newspaper articles from the ProQuest premium archive for you, probably not gonna be the richest of pickings compared to the KLF's coverage but you never know.
Any chance you could attend to The Shamen next?? ;-) --kingboyk 22:50, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Thanks a bunch for checking that out for me.  :) I've got a bunch of sources, but most of them are pretty recent, so of course they don't entirely reflect the perspective that people had 15 years ago. Any old sources would be really cool. Whenever I finish with The Orb, dunno what I'm gonna work on next. I've never heard them before, but I'll check out The Shamen. Anyways, got most of the bio stuff done, almost time for the fun sections.  :) Wickethewok 23:04, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
    • I hope the 100+ articles I sent you from ProQuest is enough ;) Sterling work mate, don't forget to expand the lead though! I'm looking forward to stealing some of your refs for KLF articles :) --kingboyk 20:24, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Haha, yeah, definitely. I've been holding off on the lead til I finish most of the body. I've pretty much finished off my sources, so I'm gonna start digging into the plethora of sources you sent me. 'ave a good weekend, mate! Wickethewok 21:11, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Don't forget to reuse your sources in other relevant articles, e.g. you've added citations and new material for the Transit Kings here but not in their article. Also, could you perhaps turn their album blue? I don't feel qualified to write about it as I don't have the album. --kingboyk 22:03, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Yarrr. I've just been adding things to here as I've been going through the sources. After I get everything crammed in here, I'll survey what I need to do after that in related articles. I'll throw the Transit Kings stuff in their article now though. Wickethewok 22:44, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Little Fluffy Clouds

The Orb's recording. "Little Fluffy Clouds" reached #87 on the UK singles chart

From my youth, I remember this being a much bigger hit. The Little Fluffy Clouds page itself says the track got to number 10, which sounds much more accurate to me. Can anyone confirm this? Indisciplined 00:21, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

  • The original release hit #87 - the re-release reached #10. See here. Wickethewok 16:33, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

GA Nomination on Hold

i beleıve that some of the music from little fluffy clouds was taken from the turkish star 'baris mancho' from one of hits from the 1970's <begin comment about writing style; note that writing style has absolutely nothing to do with the reason article is on hold> The entire article has a cramped, cluttered feel to it, like my sock drawer. I was continually fishing around for main points, and not finding any. </end gratuitous writing style comment> The article is on Hold because of the lead. Please see WP:Lead. The lead is too long; doesn't summarize the article; leaves important things out and puts less important things in. For example, didn't I see that they had a #4 song in the UK (Toxygene)? Is that in the lead? Please put a lot of thought into what should go into the lead & rewrite it from top to bottom.. --Ling.Nut 07:00, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I rewrote/reduced the lead to some of the basics. Is it too short now? Thoughts? Thanks! Wickethewok 18:30, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Much much better!
You do need something in there about the controversies regarding their remixing, just to be fair. Take these two sentences, and make them 1 sentence, as tight/short as you can get it:
  • "The Orb began producing original tracks and remixes as well, though they often featured a large number of unlicensed samples. Due to their unusual sampling and remixing habits, The Orb has often been involved in disagreements and controversies with labels and musical artists."
Thanks --Ling.Nut 21:25, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Added it to the end of the first paragraph.  :-) Wickethewok 02:34, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Good Article nomination PASS

I'm gonna PASS The Orb for GA. Good work!

I really sugest that you take a good long week or so and go over the entire article section by section and even line by line, looking for ways to tighten the writing. As I said before, sometimes what seemed like important points were kinda buried under less important ones. You're gonna need to do this anyhow for your later plans to shoot for WP:FA

Congratulations! --Ling.Nut 17:49, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Yah, still much work ahead for FA. Thanks a bunch! Wickethewok 18:25, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

"Ambiathon"?

According to this book, there is an unconfirmed rumour about Paterson and Cauty playing an eleven-hour "session" dubbed "ambiathon", and that this later provided material for Chill Out. Google turns up only an article clearly cribbed from the book, and an old USENET FAQ that calls it a DJ set rather than a recording session. A further USENET post suggests that there were early articles that contributed to this rumour, and calls it a recording session at Trancentral.

Does this fit with what other sources say? (I plan to take this to WP:KLF as well to see how well it checks out.) Of course, there's always the hope that the historical articles in question could be dug up... –Unint 03:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

  • This is consistent with what I've read. I've read this in two books, Generation Ecstasy : Into the World of Techno and Rave Culture and Ambient Century. This info is currently in the last paragraph of the "1988–1990" section. Wickethewok 06:01, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Ah, didn't make the connection at first. But this is definitely a saner statement than the fanciful notion of a single eleven-hour take. –Unint 16:02, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Additional Info

I added a couple of comments yesterday - unsourced hence why I guess you removed them. I will dig out my old NME/Melody Maker from the time as I specifcally remember an inverview with lx when he was in his most bitter mood about the Big Life treatment and he stated that Pomme Fritz was then basically saying they could release what they wanted now. Similarily a discussion about why the Blue Room was 40mins and their interview about the totp chess playing. Baz Whyte 25 February 2007

Found that NME yet? Alas I was persuaded to throw mine away (with the slight redeeming factor that they went into the recycle bin). --kingboyk 19:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Kris Weston: i left the orb because i wanted an expanded role more than engineering apparently... WTF!!! my role in the orb was of artist and engineer and producer.... so i dont see how i could have expanded my role at all..i dont recall doing an interview with ID mag either.... --Doktor Who 03:37, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

  • As it says in the article, this is what Paterson said - I'm not trying to represent it as anything more than that. Clearly both Paterson and Weston have some problems with each other (and the press!), which is why there's the "50 per cent" quote after that from ID as reprinted in the Guardian. Maybe Weston forgot about the ID interview? Patterson clearly have some Wickethewok 04:57, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
I'd like to invite some notable admin to e-mail me so that I can explain the reasons that prompted Kris Weston to strongly complain against the articles that are relevant to him. Doktor Who 23:11, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Wik and myself are both admins, and both interested in The Orb. Either one of us or both of us would be fine. We both have email turned on. --kingboyk 23:26, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
I can tell you want prompted Kris to complain, its his nature. He sued to have Orbert removed from Orbessions Volume 1. He likes to manipulate, interfere and ruin everyone's fun. This has been established (and now he has Ant and others doing his work for him).169.132.18.249 (talk) 00:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Flag

Does anybody mind if I take down the England flag? The Orb do not represent England in the sense that a footballer who plays for the national team does. There seems to be a real plague of these popping up on band articles. See also WP:FLAG.--Guinnog 20:55, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm fine with that. I don't think the lil flags really add much to the articles. Wickethewok 21:04, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
    • WP:FLAG isn't policy of course, but I decided to take the flag off WP:KLF and I support it's removal here for the reasons stated. --kingboyk 22:59, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Jarre

Found an old article on the Internet Archive where Jarre briefly denies that he didn't like the "Oxygene" remix. Of course, anyone would say that for publicity's sake, but it does seem that a few lines from a single Sunday Times article have now weighed rather heavily on all three articles discussing "Toxygene". –Unint 01:22, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

  • Hey, great! Could you please add it to that section then? I've been looking for more info on the Toxygene/Jarre stuff for awhile. Wickethewok 01:36, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
    • Done. It's a bit annoying how obscure this stuff is. Incidentally, I did find a good collection of archived dotmusic.com articles: [1]. There is an Orb one a few pages in there, and who knows what else. –Unint 02:05, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Is Fehlmann German?

His article says he was born in Switzerland. Is he Swiss or German? Lfh 14:11, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

  • He's Swiss born, but lives/works in Germany and the German music scene. I've seen him referred to as "German", "Swiss-German", and "Swiss-born German" among others. So, I'm not quite sure which is the best term. Wickethewok 14:25, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Swiss-German sounds best to me. Lfh 15:02, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Grammar

Was the article written by an American? The grammar is wrong. For example, it says, "Because of its trippy sound" - should be: "Because of their trippy sound" - unfortunately the whole article is shot through with this... Needs rewriting. In Britain, nobody says "U2 is touring" - they say "U2 are touring" Check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_differences#Formal_and_notional_agreement
