It is unlikely that the medal that Booth leaves on the casket is one he either earned or was awarded. The medal is from the Los Angeles police department, which does not fit into Booth's career path. It could be that the medal holds some unknown sentimental value to Booth, and was offered as a cherished item. I would like to believe that it wasn't that the prop department didn't have a generic or FBI sharpshooter medal (if there is such a badge).
