Great start[edit]

This really looks good so far. Thanks for creating this article---an important painting by an important artist. --Charles 02:48, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling Errorsdogihsdhg I think the last word of the article should be "project" not "proyect".

Cultural References[edit]

In the computer game "Civilization III" the opening cinematic depicts advancements in human civilization using an interpretation of this painting. It begins as the camera pans across the water to the ships whose style seems to represent nomadic people, and ascends upwards with the architectural style changing the further up into what looks like our modern era. --IronMaidenRocks 21:04, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I remember the ads for this game also prominently featuring this painting --Lamadude (talk) 23:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the video game "Shadowman" the character Jaunty mentions speaking with 'Bruegel, the medieval painter blokey' who claimed 'The Asylum' which was being constructed across Deadside resembled 'a painting he once did', and The Asylum is in fact clearly modeled on this painting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.72.96.85 (talk) 02:42, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image?[edit]

I can't understand why [[Image:Brueghel-tower-of-babel.jpg]] won't work with different pixel sizes. I'm frustrated with it as all getout. I've messed around with the template, even tried thumbing it in, but no luck. What is wrong? Anyone? Bueller? --mordicai. 16:30, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I brute-forced the image in. It seeems to not want to display at 300px? I can't figure out how to make the template work with it, so it is OUTSIDE of the template. Hardly a best case fix but at least the reader can see it now. I've got the image set to 310px which seems to be working. Gah. --mordicai. 16:36, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Engineering difficulties"[edit]

Interestingly, Brueghel's painting seems to attribute the ultimate failure of the Tower to engineering difficulties rather than to sudden, divinely-caused linguistic differences.

Isn't the one supposed to have caused the other? Anyway, this and all other uncited statements should probably be deleted. 72.72.225.102 (talk) 16:26, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. This analysis is rather straightforward and I'm sure at least a few academic papers can substantiate the deleted text which I've now reinserted. I will try to find some refs when I have some time.--Xris0 (talk) 01:52, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move[edit]

Since Wikipedia does not write the painters last name with an "h", shouldn't the page be at "The Tower of Babel (Bruegel)" rather than its current "The Tower of Babel (Brueghel)"? See for instance: Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Stefan Kruithof (talk) 08:53, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Johnbod (talk) 12:14, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some translation[edit]

--Smintheus Fellin (talk) 16:23, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Pieter Bruegel the Elder - The Tower of Babel (Vienna) - Google Art Project - edited.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on June 1, 2014. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2014-06-01. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. Thanks! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:49, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Tower of Babel
The Tower of Babel, held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, is a painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder that was completed circa 1563. It depicts the construction of the Tower of Babel, which according to the Book of Genesis in the Bible, was a tower built by a unified, monolingual humanity as a mark of their achievement and to prevent them from scattering. Bruegel completed a second painting of the same subject, known as the The "Little" Tower of Babel, at roughly the same time; it is held in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.Painting: Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Duplicate article merge[edit]

Hello, User:Sudowoodoo has created a duplicate article on this topic at The Tower of Babel (Bruegels). That article does contain some good content copied from the German-language article (although not all fully sourced) and I believe it would be best for it to be copied into this article rather than just deleted. Any comments? Blythwood (talk) 01:15, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A careful merge, yes. He deals with only one of the paintings. Johnbod (talk) 14:40, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
sure, merge and then split. hint: there are two infoboxes in this article. i look forward to your good work. Sudowoodoo (talk) 17:47, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
here is a split draft here User:Sudowoodoo/sandbox. Sudowoodoo (talk) 17:31, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FYI for those who might not be aware - the German Wikipedia has had, for a few years now, separate articles for "the series" of three paintings, and also for each of the two still-existing paintings in this series. English has only ever had the article about the whole series. I think some of the confusion about the new article on en.wp comes from the almost-exactly-the-same page titles, and I think the individual-painting title therefore needs to be moved to a more obvious disambiguation. Nevertheless, each of these two (the Small a.k.a. Rotterdam-version, and the Big a.k.a. Vienna-version) is notable in its own right and so there's no inherent reason why they couldn't exist standalone as well as the "main" article on the series. Ultimately, it comes down to a mergism/separatism question. Wittylama 08:01, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'd think they are much better kept together, especially if the alternative involves crappy one-line stubs like the draft. Johnbod (talk) 13:24, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • User:Sudowoodoo is now a blocked sockpuppet, so I'll do the merge. The great majority of the material is the same, so this seems best. Johnbod (talk) 14:49, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The pre-merge other page is here. There's an interesting quote on the architecture that is so badly translated from the German that I can't use or copyedit is - if anyone can provide a translation I'd be grateful. Johnbod (talk) 15:44, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
