anachronism

This article asserts that the painting, completed around 1513, was based on a sitter who lived from 1318 – 1369. I suspect that either this may be the wrong Margaret of Tyrol (unlikely, as her page says she was the last countess of the region, or that it's simply false.

Picture of the day

A 1513 portrait of an unknown Duchess, possibly Margaret, Countess of Tyrol, by Flemish painter Quentin Matsys. She holds a red flower in her right hand, at the time a symbol of engagement, indicating that she is trying to attract a suitor. This portrait inspired the appearance of the Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The portrait is Matsys' best-known work, and formed half of a diptych. The painting is in the National Gallery in London.

There seems to be no article on the companion piece, which seems to be of another style. is there no published source on their relationship? this calls into question the portrait's status as satire. this needs more research 98.206.155.53 (talk) 03:18, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

WP is as unreliable as ever. The painting is not a satire, it is an actual woman suffering from a disorder, probably commissioned. Hence the warmth and care in the portrait, and why Da Vinci would be so interested in it himself. There are sources out there. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 05:06, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
