How do we know the picture of the Butterfly Kid cover is not usable when it is on the Wikipedia page for that book? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rietzef (talkcontribs) 18:11, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please refer to WP:OTHERIMAGE and WP:NFC#cite_note-3. The fact that a non-free image is being used in one article does not mean (1) that particular non-free use complies with Wikipedia's non-free content use policy or (2) the non-free use in any additional articles is automatically compliant or the same. The file is being used as the primary identification purposes in The Butterfly Kid at the top of the article in the main infobox. This type of non-free use is generally allowed per WP:NFC#cite_note-3; the non-free use of the cover art in this article, however, is not the same; it's being used in a subsection of another article mentioning the book. This type of non-free use requires a much stronger justification per the aforementioned cite_note-3, which generally means the cover art is itself the subject of sourced critical commentary to meet WP:NFCC#8.
Non-free use is not automatic, so if you truly believe that the file's non-free use of the file is justified in this article, please provided the separate, specific non-free use rationale required by WP:NFCC#10c for its use. Please make sure the rationale specifically states how the file's particular use in this article meets all ten non-free content criteria. Providing a rationale is the first step per WP:NFCCE, but the rationale doesn't automatically mean policy compliant per WP:JUSTONE and the rationale may be challenge by any editor who feels the file's use needs further discussion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:12, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining. Is there any way I could add the cover of The Unicorn Girl to the main infobox of this article? Rietzef (talk) 23:15, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you can find a "clean" image of the book's cover somewhere online and are able to provide as much information as you can about copyright ownership (see WP:NFCC#10a for the types of information generally expected), then you probably can upload such a file per item #1 of WP:NFCI. I suggest using Template:Non-free book cover for the copyright license and Template:Non-free use rationale book cover for the non-free use rationale. If you're not given these options when you first upload the file via Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard, you can change things around after the file has been uploaded. You don't have to use a template for either, but using them does make things a bit easier and helps keep things standardized. For the rationale, just complete as many of the template's parameters as you can. If you're not sure about any of this, you can ask for help at WP:MCQ, WT:NFC or maybe even WP:FFU. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:22, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Rietzef: Are you by chance c:User:Dempsema or Dempsema? If you are (you don't need to confirm it here), then two things: (1) you should be aware of WP:MULTIPLE and that (2) book covers are almost always protected by copyright unless it is clearly indicated otherwise and Commons does not accept fair use content. Only the original copyright holder can release their work under a free license, and images found online (even those which can be downloaded "free of change") are not automatically considered to be free from copyright protection. If it's not you but one of your classmates and you know them, then please advise them of the same. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:51, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it was one of my classmates. I reuploaded the image and I hope it's good now. Rietzef (talk) 03:25, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It should be fine. I saw what you tried to do to the Commons file; Commons, however, doesn't accept non-free content so uploading it locally for use on Enlgish Wikipedia only was the right thing to so. Please explain things to your classmate and let them know that the image is likely going to be deleted from Commons some time soon (if it already hasn't been). If they have any questions about why, they can ask for help at c:COM:VP/C or post on their user talk. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:10, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi all! Thank you MarchJuly! I'm going to post a quick overview of image copyright on Wikipedia as far as book covers go to Dempsema's page, so make sure and read over this! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:02, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
