La voragine, is not spanish...[edit]

José Eustasio Rivera was born in Colombia in 1888, and "La Vorágine" is the title of the book. La Vorágine is Spanish.[edit]

Although google translate may have misled you with a poor translation of vortex to vortice, vorágine is indeed a Spanish word. Though it may sound French or Portuguese (because along with Italian all 4 mentioned are related - romance languages) as evidenced below from the authority in Spanish, the definition of vorágine in Spanish fits very well to the plot and writing style of Rivera's novel.

vorágine Del lat. vorāgo, -ĭnis. 1. f. Remolino impetuoso que hacen en algunos parajes las aguas del mar, de los ríos o de los lagos. 2. f. Neutrality issue resolved[edit]

Both answers to the prompt that started this discussion suffice to resolve the issue, in particular the RAE dictionary entry, confirming that "vorágine" is in fact a Spanish word.
