Why did Oppenheimer believe that sabots would be needed by the Thin Man design?

Hyphenate 3-inch gun as a compound adjective. And the sizes of the weapon: 38 inches (97 cm) wide tail and nose assemblies, and a 23 inches (58 cm) midsection
