QUESTIONS REGARDING THOMAS DUTTON AND ANNE TOUCHET AS PARENTS OF MARGARET DUTTON[edit]

This article states that "Sir Thomas Dutton married Anne Touchet. Their children were: Margaret Dutton who married Sir William Veneable ... son of Roger De Veneable of Kinderton, and his wife, Alice Pennington."

However, it is not clear that the Margaret Dutton, who married William Venables (i.e. Veneable), son of Roger de Venables and Alice de Peninton (i.e. Pennington), was the daughter of Thomas Dutton and Anne Touchet. Neither of the two references included seem to refer directly to the connection between Margaret and her alleged parents. It would be helpful if such references could be included.

The first reference given here, "VCH Lane, 1911, IV, 305", is a bit terse, but presumably refers to a volume of the "Victoria County History". Investigation reveals that none of the editors of the Victoria Histories were named Lane. It is presumed that this is a typographical error, and that "Lane" should be read "Lanc", the abbreviation for Lancaster. The intended referenced is then assumed to have been "Victoria History of the County of Lancaster", Vol. 4, p. 305. A search of the 1911 edition of this volume reveals no reference to Margaret, or her parents. The only Thomas Dutton mentioned is in reference to an event from 1368, long after Margaret's parents were dead. Thus, I see no case presented here to accept the claim that the Margaret Dutton who married William Venable was the daughter of Thomas Dutton and Anne Touchet.

However, it may be worth giving some consideration to the following two sources, which name Margaret's parents as a different Thomas Dutton and his wife, Philippa de Standon:

1) "Collin's Peerage of England", Vol. 8, p. , by Sir Egerton Brydges (1812).

2) "History of the County Palatine and City of Chester", Vol. 1, p. 477, by George Omerod (1819).

Margaret is also given as daughter of Thomas Dutton, without mention of Philippa de Standon, in the following source:

3) "History of the County Palatine and City of Chester", Vol. 3, pp. 67, 103, 106, by George Omerod (1819).

Though some of the sources given here are a bit older, it is not clear that better supporting evidence has been cited in this article in regard to the identity of Margaret's parents. Clarification of this matter would certainly be appreciated.
