construction
[edit]This just occurred to me -- does anyone know if during construction they were digging under the existing canal, or did they wait until winter when shipping season was over, block off and drain a section of the canal, dig the tunnel in the bottom and then cover it up? The former makes more sense, especially when considering that the tunnel also passes under some service reservoirs, but the presence of a downhill lock nearby would make potential draining simplified...
Just out of curiosity, and to make sure what I wrote on Townline Tunnel (... the Thorold Tunnel had to be dug underneath the existing waterway) is correct. --qviri 09:10, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
