Rhotath of the Moonstone and the asphodel.

[edit]

Darkpriestmage Rhotath in "The curse of the golden skull" calls himself "of the Moonstone and the asphodel". Could this Moonstone be identical with "The red heart of the night" i.e. The heart of Ahriman in Conans days? The asphodel was a flower, in itself of course quite harmless, that the greek did dedicate to Persephone, queen of the realm of the dead(Derketo in Conan?)With time the fields of the underworld were thought to be covered with asphodel. In "The scarlet citadel" Conan meets a nice flower presumably rooted in Hell. Could this be Rhotaths Asphodel? Then "rhotacism" was a linguistic peculiarity typical for the region of Elis in ancient Greece. This was the one place were Hades, Lord of the underworld(Zeus cthonos) was worshipped in sole majesty - and host-city of the olympic games. Did perhaps these develop out of ritual games being part of the cult of the forces of the Underworld? This was definitely the case with their italic counterpart, the tarentine games outside Rome, allegedly founded by a man named Tarentinus. Note: Tarantia capital of Aquilonia. The Caesars did transfer these games to palatine Apollo (Hyperborea) and his cult. The idol of Rhotath seems to be a ruby-eyed skull. In the story it is referred to a predecessor of "The book of Skelos" in Conans days. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.130.31.203 (talk) 08:07, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
