New world record holder!

[edit]

She just ran the Berlin Marathon 2023 in under 2:12, a new world record! WiseWoman (talk) 10:21, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong name

[edit]

Her name at the World Athletics official site is Tigst Assefa not TigIst assefa.[1] The birth date was also wrong. MachoCarioca (talk) 11:43, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Here is how the date got messed up, quote copied from LetsRun.
Here is how the date is switched from Dec to Mar and vice versa in Ethiopia
Born: December 4, 1997. (let us say).
December 4 is November 25 in Ethiopia. So in Ethiopia the birth date would be recorded as 25-3-1990 because the day is written first, and the month is 3 because November is the third month of the Ethiopian year which starts on September 11. And in November, the day is 9 days behind the Gregorian calendar so Nov 25+9 days = Dec 4. And the year is minus seven until January.
Simply writing 25-3-1990 would be interpreted as March 5, 1990 in Europe (day first). So somebody made a mistake by forgetting to translate the day/month. A later correction would replace the March birthdate with the December date.

@MachoCarioca: Thanks for flagging it up! when I look into it, it seems that lots of sources are reporting her name as Tigist, with two i's, including BBC Sport [2]. Given that sources differ, and some pretty reputable/ authoritative sources list her name as Tigist, what would you say is the best outcome per Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(people)? Tigst might be the best choice (and if so, sorry for reverting!) as that's cited by the Berlin Marathon Page. Thoughts? :) KluskaSlaska (talk) 14:18, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MachoCarioca: This link probably clarifies it, as it explicitly mentions the fact that her name is written in two ways and that Tigst is the correct way to spell it. Will need to figure out how to change the name of the page :) [3] KluskaSlaska (talk) 14:41, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Final update: reading through all the sources, I ended up moving the page since only Tigst is the correct name. Thanks so much for flagging it up! (Also curious to what degree BBC et al were using Wikipedia as a source for the spelling of the name!) KluskaSlaska (talk) 14:53, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@AlbertRA: Did you review the discussion here before moving this page? Funcrunch (talk) 16:53, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't read the discussion. Sorry if I rushed the renaming. AlbertRA (talk) 15:58, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
