Toad's new article[edit]

Being a major character he is now with his separate article. It has been agreed that he should have his own page on the talk in list of Mario characters. GS Sentret 16:22, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry about that PROD, Sentret, did not realize there had been a discussion on the matter. Staxringold talkcontribs 23:35, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

Per this revert, I put that there because the lead is supposed to be a summary of the article. There should be something from almost every section. I do think that whole thing didn't really need to be there, but I didn't know what to cut. Blake (Talk·Edits) 02:54, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you're right about that... Having that there seems to be a little awkward, though... I reverted it because it was identical to the text later on in the article. If you were to paraphrase it, that would be fine. BAPACop (converse) 02:59, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Toad (species) section[edit]

Seeing as there are numerous times where generic toads appear in the series, should there be one section on this article explaining their roles and being the mushroom kingdom citizens? This could also include about the Toad brigade and the New Super mario bros wii toads. GS Sentret 02:00, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I dont think so. Their role is said in the "Appearances" section. Toad being a Mushroom Kingdom citizen should just be mentioned in the lead. Blake (Talk·Edits) 18:16, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I think it's considerable. Except those who don't have official names (eg. Toad Brigade members), we did see many other toad individuals who had different careers and family in RPGs. As Toad is an individual, it could be important to claim that it's dangerous to confuse Kinopio with other Kino members. -- Doracake 15:20, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Toad Article being defaced[edit]

Happening as i type this. Anyone who looks at the first two sections will notice the vulgarities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.121.27.66 (talk) 19:56, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It happens. We just quietly revert the vandalism and move on. See Wikipedia:Vandalism for more details. -Verdatum (talk) 21:29, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sex[edit]

I know it was covered in the archive, but like plants, Fungi don't have a sex. 129.139.1.68 (talk) 20:52, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Toad's male. It's confirmed in the games and by Nintendo themselves. Also, Toad's a fictional humanoid mushroom so real life fungi has no revelance to him. Note Toadette as well. User:GS Sentret —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.31.156.130 (talk) 02:12, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted C&P move to Toad (character)[edit]

I reverted the move because it was a C&P move, but also because I am contesting the fact that (character) is a valid disambiguator. There are several characters named Toad (1, 2, 3). Even Toad (video game character) or Toad (video games) would fail, as Toad (comics) has also appeared in video games. Thus Toad (Mario) uses the simplest possible accurate disambiguator. Feel free to start a RM to generate more discussion about this if needed. Salvidrim! 23:06, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Toad (Mario) → ? – (possibly Toad (Super Mario)) Per WP:NCVGDAB, since the name of the game series seems to be Super Mario, the disambiguator should change. I could see how the disambiguator "Mario" could stay, but right now, the word "Mario" in references to the franchise at Mario (franchise) (which is not the primary topic for the term "Mario", and could be confusing ... even though the current primary topic is the character of the series.) Steel1943 (talk) 22:46, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose as proposed - Obviously, neither Toad (character) nor even Toad (video game character) aren't precise enough for this topic, whereas Toad (Mario) is unambiguous. Toad (Super Mario) is visibly less WP:CONCISE than Toad (Mario). It is not about "the Super Mario series vs. the Mario franchise and/or the character of Mario". It is simply the shortest, most precise way to disambiguate this title. However, I would support an alternative proposal to retitle it Toad (Nintendo) (which was also the original title), since that title avoids any confusion, and is (IMO) more "readable" to the common viewer since it avoids using two character names (one as title and one as disambiguator). ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  00:07, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Salvidrim!: Yeah, I wasn't 100% behind my initial reasoning anyways, so I just changed the proposed move to "elsewhere". Steel1943 (talk) 00:11, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Clarified, I am opposing any move ideas. Hill Crest's WikiLaser! (BOOM!) 00:31, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Super Mario" can also refer to the character anyways... would you also support the alt proposal Toad (Nintendo), which is meaningful, and moves away from other characters' names entirely? ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  13:58, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - perfectly clear and very concise disambiguation device (haha, it rhymes) Red Slash 00:09, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • While I still support the current disambiguator, I would probably slightly prefer Toad (Nintendo) for clarity. Red Slash 20:56, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Less consise, and Toad has appeared in the Mario franchise outside of the main Super Mario games. I am okay with "Toad (Nintendo)" however. Reach Out to the Truth 12:49, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, simply because both of the proposed alternatives are more confusing than the existing title. Toad is a prominent character in the Mario franchise (the Super Mario series is only a part of that franchise), therefore the current title is the most fitting. (If I had to choose, Toad (Nintendo) is better than Toad (Super Mario), but I suggest we keep it as it is.) Satellizer (´ ・ ω ・ `) 05:29, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Salvidrim and Satellizer's reasons. Sergecross73 msg me 18:18, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose and leave title as is Toad appears in many games not in the Super Mario part of the Mario franchise. e.g. Mario Party series. Hill Crest's WikiLaser! (BOOM!) 03:38, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Absolutely no problem with the current title in terms of reader experience. As the rules are being interpreted above as justifying a change, either these interpretations or the rules themselves are just plain wrong. I suspect it's just the interpretations. New title[edit]

@Salvidrim!:, sorry but I find the new title to be problematic and goes against precedent. While it's true Toad isn't limited to Mario games anymore, he's still very much specifically a Mario character (as opposed to Nintendo character, which is too broad) and originates from the Mario franchise.

To provide some examples Chao (Sonic) has stayed at its current pagename for the longest time without any issues, and isn't at Chao (Sega) despite "Sonic" also being the name of a character. Kasumi (Dead or Alive), Momiji (Ninja Gaiden), Ayane (Dead or Alive) and Rachel (Ninja Gaiden) all retain their current titles despite there being high degrees of crossover between the DOA and Ninja Gaiden franchises. Taki (Soulcalibur), Jade (Mortal Kombat), Anna Williams (Tekken), Sarah Bryant (Virtua Fighter) and Link (The Legend of Zelda) are some other characters off the top of my head that are disambiguated by their primary series instead of their publisher company, despite all five frequently having cameo/crossover appearances.

To provide a non-video game example, both Category:Male Shakespearean characters and Category:Female Shakespearean characters are disambiguated (where necessary) by the play they appear in instead of "(Shakespeare character)" as a disambiguator. Altered the Captain Toad, and Toad singular Character thing[edit]

Only a few games in Japan like Super Mario RPG, and Super Mario Bros 2 make reference to a singular Toad character, most others do not distinguish him as a singular individual unlike with Yoshi. Captain Toad has been stated to be a separate character introduced in Super Mario Galaxy(Link), so I removed references to him being the Toad who as already mentioned is much less prominent then the article suggests. On the recent news story...[edit]

At this point, barring any further coverage, I would strongly recommend mention of Stormy Daniels' comment on Trump that involves Toad be kept out of this article. Partially as it is a BLP/gossip issue that violates content policy. --Masem (t) 14:57, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Toad, Trump, and Stormy Daniels[edit]

If anyone knows how to fold this in, feel free...!

https://boingboing.net/2018/09/18/stormy-daniels-says-trumps-p.html kencf0618 (talk)

See above, right now it would be a BLP story. If this still is a big talking point in the media in a few days, then maybe it makes sense. --Masem (t) 15:29, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request re: Appearances in Other Media subsection[edit]

Reference to Toad in Stormy Daniels' book "Full Disclosure" are notable and newsworthy. The brought Toad to the attention of a national audience, including, significantly, a large number of people who do not play video games and would otherwise be unaware of the character. This is a very significant media appearance and is a relevant and notable item which should be included in this article. I propose the inclusion of the following text in the "Appearance in Other Media" section:

In 2018, writing about a sexual encounter with the future president, performer Stormy Daniels alleged in her book Full Disclosure that Donald Trump's penis resembles "the mushroom character in Mario Kart," an apparent reference to Toad.[1]

If brief references to Toad in popular songs or episodes of Robot Chicken belong in this article, a reference to Toad that reaches national awareness in a published book certainly does as well. 70.184.101.72 (talk) 17:33, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

References

Not done That Robot Chicken ref was removed properly as it fails WP:TRIVIA (it should be noted by third-parties). On the Stormy Daniels stuff, it is presently a BLP issue (it's an unfounded accusation). Right now its lighting up the Internet, but that doesn't make it appropriate to include. If in a few days it still a big story, then there may be reason to include it, but we should keep it out of here until then. (Also the fact that it doesn't mention Toad directly but only by allusion, doesn't help). --Masem (t) 17:39, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Respectfully, it's irrelevant if it's an "unfounded accusation." Besides the obvious question of "how do you confirm it?", the fact that it is being discussed at all is, in and of itself, notable vis-a-vis Toad. It is a major, nationally prominent reference to Toad which exposed the character to a significant new audience. That is notable. Other article include similar discussions, e.g. Milton Berle (discussing penis size). I alternately propose that this information be included in a relevant section of the Donald Trump article. 70.184.101.72 (talk) 17:54, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not done Wikipedia is not a newspaper and we do not include every salacious detail that rolls off the presses. If this is established in time to be of some lasting historical significant to the subject of this article, then it may be included. Currently it is little more than celebrity gossip. What should or should not go on the article for Donald Trump should be discussed on Talk:Donald Trump and not here. GMGtalk 17:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This item may be celebrity gossip as it relates to Trump (i.e. the ultimate questions of the appearance of Trump's penis). That is a discussion that should be reserved for Talk:Donald Trump. For purposes of the Toad article, however, it carries a different significance. It is not gossip, but fact, that Daniels described Trump's penis using an allusion to the character Toad, as verified by the citation in the proposed edit. The significance is not the the President's member resembles Toad, but that Toad was referenced to an international audience. That is at least as noteworthy as an apperance on Robot Chicken, reference to which remains in the article, despite t's assurance to the contrary.
It's still just celebrity gossip, and it wouldn't hurt my feelings any if the Robot Chicken bit were removed as well. It's a show that uses action figures as their shtick, and has surely featured hundred or thousands of characters. Wikipedia does not need to note in every one of those articles that the character made an appearance on Robot Chicken. GMGtalk 18:18, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Once again, it is not gossip as it relates to Toad. WP:BLPGOSSIP directs editors to look int other truthfulness of the proffered information. Here, it is 100% truthful than Daniels alluded to Toad in this context. Perhaps the balance of equities would be different if this was a proposed edit of Donald Trump. But this does not constitute gossip within the meaning of WP:BLPGOSSIP as it pertains to Toad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.184.101.72 (talk) 18:31, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is 100% true that all celebrity gossip is gossip by someone about a celebrity. GMGtalk 18:48, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Excluding this item from the Toad page as unfounded gossip is unwarranted. Consider the article for Whoomp! (There It Is), which includes a rather extensive section discussing the (false) rumor that Barack Obama appeared in the music video for that song. Plainly that is gossip as it relates to Obama and has no place on his article, but it is relevant to the song in that is brought the music video to wide public attention. Similar phenomenon at issue here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.184.101.72 (talk) 19:06, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And I've removed that bit too. GMGtalk 19:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I find it troubling that you would rather vandalize other articles to support your untenable position than simply include a revision on this article that is fully in line with Wikipedia criteria for inclusion.
Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of pop culture trivia. It's certainly not a collection of lurid pop culture trivia inserted in articles because it happens to be in the news. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It covers subjects in a breadth and depth that is proportionate to their lasting educational significance. There is no indication whatsoever that Donald Trump's dick has any lasting significance to the core educational value of this video game character. You may lament that as you like, but it doesn't change the facts. GMGtalk 22:59, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This might belong at Full Disclosure (book), but I cannot bring myself to write about Trump's mushroom head. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:28, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I watchlisted it, because it's sure to be a crap shoot once it comes out. I'm still trying to find the time to write the article for Heart Berries, which is entirely more deserving of both my attention and a DYK. GMGtalk 00:13, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To add to GMG: whereas Berle's penis size was the subject of rumor and discussion for years, we have something that is less than 12 hrs old here, so its hard to judge lasting importance. Further, I stress the BLP aspect - it is (and likely will remain) an unfounded accusation against a living person, so until it's proven more significant than just a random video game reference, it should be omitted. --Masem (t) 18:04, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is no BLP concern. The information is being proffered not as a factual biographical detail of Trump, but as a factual, documented, notable reference to a fictional character. This is a proposed edit of the Trump page. Your BLP concerns are unfounded.

Shameful that when our beloved, mushroom-headed young lad rises to prominence, arouses the public imagination, stands tall amidst the news cycle, rigid with an integrity bestowed by Nintendo, full to the brim with creative force, that we must treat him so, pull him out of the limelight, allow him to fall flaccid after just a few seconds of attention, put him into this refractory period where we can't think about him and his lofty place amongst those notorious johnsons and richards. How long must we wait for for a faint tickle to 'rouse that wide-brimmed head, to stand tall, veins straining along his shaft-like body, this choad Toad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.156.22.254 (talk) 20:37, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
