Nickname[edit]

Am I wrong to believe that he was known as the Phantom Winger, hence the pub in Broughton? Longwayround 10:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious Information[edit]

Caps and goal figures in the article likely contain European cup/Domestic cup data in addition to Domestic League data (this is very certain based on this user's previous edits containing similar information [1]. Please correct this issue and leave a note here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Alfmaster#Footballers.27_European_goals, to warn this person about putting improper information on Wikipedia. --Palffy 21:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Omar Sharif[edit]

How could Omar Sharif have played against Tom Finney during world war II? According to the article on Omar Sharif, he was born in 1932 and would thus have been around 10 years old during the war. 83.227.2.55 19:48, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Likeness in Spectator Stand[edit]

Did I see once that PNE has Finney's "picture" in one of their stands using different colour spectator seating? Downunda 02:45, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they do have that XPhile2868 00:57, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

Almost everything in this article is copied from http://www.ifhof.com/hof/finney.asp

For such a major player, someone who knows about the subject should write a proper bio.

Indian National Army[edit]

Why the heck are they mentioned in his career? He played against Italy! Its vandalism. Here what it says.

"He Played agansit the indian national army in 1948 and to this date is the only player in both sides that played that game and is still alive." Huh?--Villa88 (talk) 23:43, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sir Tom Finney was born on the 5th of April 1922 in St Michaels Road just a throw away from Deapdale, the venue which would, a few years later, hold court to his special talent as a footballer.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.193.148.45 (talk) 10:20, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two penalties in one match[edit]

Sort of correct. He did once score 2 in an international match, against Portugal in a friendly in 1950, but the second goal wasn't in a penalty shoot-out - they didn't have them then (and why would it be done in a friendly anyway?). His second penalty and fourth goal of the game was scored after 72 minutes. Stevew2022 (talk) 21:58, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Knighthood[edit]

When was he knighted? Ausseagull (talk) 13:00, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He was knighted in the New Years Honours list in December 1997.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.104.61.28 (talk) 22:52, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Warning using circular references[edit]

Looking for some more stuff to reference this after Finney's death, I happened upon The Independent's article "by" Ed Aarons, which is essentially the Wikipedia article as of a few hours ago, with, needless to say, no credit to Wikipedia. Please take care when using sources published today as I suspect they'll take a lot from our article without bothering to actually do any real work. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:02, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Death quotes[edit]

The section on Finney's death includes quotes by Stanley Matthews and Bill Shankly, both of whom were deceased by his time of death. Should these quotes be moved elsewhere? The Almightey Drill (talk) 21:33, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but you're right, it hadn't struck me until you said that. I'll try a re-phrase. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:56, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Loyalty[edit]

There is a reference to his 'loyalty to his league club, Preston North End' but because in his day the club held a footbaler's registration and Preston refused to release him loyalty had little to do with it.

But then again there is no indication he wanted to leave.--Egghead06 (talk) 22:43, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

cause of death[edit]

If a man dies at the age of 91, I think it might reasonably be assumed that the cause of death is old age. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:6F:8B01:1625:585F:878A:70B5:CD24 (talk) 15:30, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
