Project Assessment[edit]

A fine start, but a bit short. Those "Note:" sections that form the bottom portion of the article need to be converted into regular paragraphs or sections within the article's overall content. LordAmeth 14:30, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

May I suggest that someone with the knowledge of the colored map sections depicted explain better in words about the 900 years South extension progress entioned and that this whole thing need revising to show cross references to the pages for Annam, Tonkin, Chchin China which all belong in a Vietnam page, as Tonkin really referres to the Northern third I believe.

Furthermore the Border of Tonkin here depicted is that border is only recently agreed between China and Vietnam Sovereign States. For a long time several Chinese States were disputed in Vietnam and vice versa several Vietnam States were claimed by China. I do think in this case it is best to avoid trying to cover all that in this article anyhow.

We might also mention that when Vietnam was theoretically China, long before Lac Long Quan legend established the Kingdom we refer to as Vietnam today, the word nam of the country Viet Nam was a regional southern part of china and the provincial/regional people called Viets a race/tribe of Chinese people, whilst "Nam" translates as "Southern" indicated their nomadic domocile South of the Yangsee or Yellow River.--Robbygay (talk) 05:32, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Should the name Jiaozhi (Giao Chỉ) be mentioned in this article? Badagnani (talk) 16:43, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

inappropriate image?[edit]

That appears to be a map showing all of Vietnam and Tonkin isn't even highlighted (is it the yellow area?). Wouldn't something more akin to this one showing Yorkshire in England be more appropriate?

Proposed split[edit]

I think it might be a good idea to split the article between Tonkin as a historical region, and Tonkin (French protectorate), just as we have Annam (French protectorate) or, for another country, French protectorate in Morocco. I have also proposed to split Cochinchina in two, so we may have an article for each of the three parts of "French Vietnam" (the colony of Cochinchina and the two protectorates of Annam and Tonkin). I had proposed this three years ago and completely forgotten about it. No one has raised any objections, so I guess there's no opposition ? Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 14:57, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Are the Han characters for Bắc Kỳ "北區" (as this article states) or "北圻" (as the Vietnamese-language Wikipedia states? 76.189.141.37 (talk) 17:21, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
