Monk?

[edit]

Is he really a thai monk? I think it is more likely that he just spend a few months in a monastry as a monk. I think this is quite common in south east asia. But this does not make him a monk--89.246.163.4 (talk) 16:42, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

[edit]

bonjour tony jaa tu va bien?

I know wikipedia very well. want to reliable source? every interview he gave, he always mention about "as a thai person, I ..." go check it out —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.238.152.137 (talk) 11:38, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Every country is a mixing pot. That is so true. But hey! philippines is wo wo... my filipino friends are sooo mix! but they call themselves filipino because they are connected to the philippines. They might have spanish, arabian, malay (origin of filipino people) , chinese , american ... but they are definitely 'filipino' because that's their home. Same here, Tony Ja's home country is thailand. His relative live in Thailand. His connection lies in thailand. Most important, he represents him country, thailand - well done p'Tony Jaa! im proud of him. I am THAI. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.238.152.234 (talk) 04:33, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your pride doesnt matter. Wikipedia is not a soapbox. If you wish to include a reference to his ethnicity, you must provide a reliable source. -- The Red Pen of Doom 11:49, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand why some people try to push a race issue into this article. Thailand is like a mixing pot of so many different cultures, be it Lao, Cambodia, Chinese, Burmese, Mon. It's not really that surprising if someone from Thailand is not of pure Thai blood. So what if his ancestor was from Lao or Cambodia (I use Cambodian in the edit to cut it short)Just about all of our stars are half-Chinese, half-caucasian, or half-Laotian. Why make such a fuss (or "controversy", ha, I laughed at this word) over this thing? If there is a controvery, it is one-sided. Thai people do not care. Suredeath 22:49, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hmmn... yea thats why i only put he can only speak khmer from the video i found and it also states on one of the websites...theres no proof that he is khmer only assumptions.Ifire 20:45, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well just about most of South East Asia is a mix of some other race; alot of folks are mix Vietnam and Cambodia due to the wars.

I wouldn't suggest it is a "fuss" or a "controversy", merely the truth. He's Khmer Leu, highland Khmer. Elephants are their thing. The Khmer Leu were Angkor's war machine, providing the war elephants for the Khmer Empire. It's not putting a race issue, it's merely noting his ethnicity. He's a Thai national, but not ethnic-Thai.KhProd1 (talk) 07:59, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's really not worth mentioning at all.Suredeath (talk) 11:44, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Khmer Leu are Thai people who live in south of northeastern Thailand, they speaks Thai language, but with some Khmer tones and vocabularies sometimes. However, they are Thai. They are not Khmer. If he is half-Cambodian he is half. But if he is full Thai he is Thai. --Passawuth (talk) 02:15, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

awwww guys hes neither Khmer, central Thai, or Lao. Its kinda depressing.:( Hes from the Kuy tribe apparently.137.164.79.11 (talk) 23:39, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Protector

[edit]

Apparently, Tony Jaa is in a new movie called The Protector, according to this released poster.[1] There doesn't seem to be an article about the film or a mention about this movie in the person's article. Is anyone willing to find the time to look into this? Erik 22:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Protector is the US title for Tom-Yum-Goong. Wisekwai 23:12, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the title being used on the American DVD as well. You can rent it from Netflix but be aware if you want to watch the uncut version, you need to rent the 2nd disc. the first disc only has a very seriously edited version plus some extras. Disc 2 has the full Thai version of the film with english subtitles.LiPollis 07:00, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Martial Art skills

[edit]

Uh, the current looks rather odd. Muay Thai, Muay Boran, Aikido, Pencak Silat, Capoeira, Wushu, Krabi Krabong and Taekwondo

Muay Thai, Aikido, Krabi Krabong, and Taekwondo - These I can see. Pencak Silat, Capoeira, Wushu - I have doubts. Was it because some moves in the movie just happen to look similar? Especially, how do you define the phrase 'have skills in'? Does that mean he's the certified master of these arts, or just someone who got 30 minutes lesson from someone? And aren't Muay thai and Muay Boran cutting it pretty close? They are quite similar. Better get some sources to go with these first.Suredeath 16:01, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

mid-september 2005, thairath newspaper printed an article stating that tony would teach additional techniques of pencak silat to the thai silat team in their preparation for SEA games tournament. the article is no longer on their website.

No. Muay Boran and Muay Thai aren't as similiar as most people think. I'll not lose my time explainning the diferences. But yes, Tony Jaa is skilled in Capoeira and Wushu. We can conclude that in the basis that some of the kicks he performs on Ong Bak ( Muay Boran is highlighted on Warrior King, but still has moves that doesn't belong to it ), are not tough in Muay Thai, such as the "martelo-ipê" kick, the aerial roundoff, the butterfly kick and the spreaded-legs dodge he frequently uses to escape bigger enemies or obstacles, wich are all Wushu or Capoeira moves. I would like to state that, we are only supposed to remove information from the page when we have absolute CERTAIN that the info is WRONG. We should not remove info based on personal opnions. And I would like to say that, if Tony Jaa have mastered skills on all the arts above, or either if he had "30 minutes lessons", it's not of our concern, if anybody wishes to know that, that person should seek Jaa and ask him personally, instead of making speculations.

With this post I edit the "Martial Art Skills" back to the information that is most correct. 201.24.52.179 (talk) 20:22, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, hi, you got everything backward. You're supposed to write in what you are absolutely sure. Encyclopedia is about what is fact and can be proven. It's not about being CERTAIN that the info is WRONG, it's about being CERTAIN that the info is right. It's putting in what you can prove to have happen, not about what you can't prove to not have happen. Otherwise, I could have put in Titanic of wikipedia that there are seven sharks feeding on the drowning people. Can you say for certain that the info is WRONG?Suredeath (talk) 06:11, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rumored projects

[edit]

Deleted the following added to Next projects by User 210.211.180.193:

Tony is Rumored to portray the Shaolin Monk Liu Kang\The Enigmatic Ninja Ermac In Mortal Kombat Devastation(Aka Mortal Kombat III).This Info was taken from a mail sent by Mortal Kombat Master 777, a Member of the Bulgarian-English Fansite Mortal Kombat Secrets,to the Producers of the Film.

I don't think it's solid enough to appear in an encyclopedia article. - Wisekwai 12:51, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Friends

[edit]

The following was added in under a "Friend" subheading under "Skills" by Bryangohigans:

"His best friend that he still keeps in touch with is David Lim."

While it is nice to have friends, I feel such information is not really encyclopedic. However, if it could be established how Tony and David became acquainted, what have they collaborated on, etc., then that's the kind of information that could find its way into the article. – WiseKwai | Talk | Contribs 21:51, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In reading about David Lim, I'm not certain that the person described in the article is the same person as the one described in this earlier edit of the same article. – WiseKwai | Talk | Contribs 22:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there infact consensus of editors that we should make an exception to the external link guidelines for this site, or is this just a random claim from someone who wants to pimp their site? -- The Red Pen of Doom 16:42, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Professional Muay Thai

[edit]

I'm currently training Muay Thai in Thailand with a guy who claims to have beaten Tony Jaa in a professional Muay Thai fight. My trainer is only two years younger than Jaa and comes from the same part of Isaan so his claim to have gone to school with him is plausible, but I would like some way of verifying Tony Jaa's fight record. The general opinion I hear from Thai people is he makes good films but was crap at real Muay Thai, so no doubt if he had fought my trainer (who used to be very successful in Bangkok) he would have lost, but my trainer's english isn't perfect (he's from a pretty poor part of thailand and has just picked it up from falang fighters like me) so there may be some translation issues. It would be cool to be trainer with a guy who once beat Tony Jaa so if anyone could verify this and add it to the page that would be great. I'll try looking myself but learning Thai script is pretty hard going to I wont be able to check any thai websites for a while

Chrishopkins53 (talk) 01:53, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think your trainer is trying to impress people with this. :) Tony Jaa - as far as I have read in several interviews - was trained to be a Muay Thai Stuntman since he was 15. Which means that he never competed in the ring. [2] So it might also be doubtful that they went to the same fight school, since Jaa has trained with Panna Rittikrai. So I would say it's pretty unlikely your trainer ever had a real fight with Tony Jaa. Just like Jet Li, Jaa is an athlete and martial arts actor. These people use their skills for a show and entertainment. 小龙 (Timish) # xiǎolóng de xìnxiāng 14:53, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In the "Early Life" section up towards the top--it says, "At age 15 he requested to marry his mum Begumsnd become a protege of stuntman" Can someone explain what this even means? That's not even a real sentence. He "requested to marry his mum Bugumsnd become a pretege of stuntman"??? What does this mean?

Nuk leng klong yao may not be a "Tony Jaa" film per a user review on IMDB.[3] It's not listed on his Thai filmography.

Page protection required

[edit]

This page seriously needs to be protected. I personally don’t know how to do it. There’s been too much vandalism on this page recently. IsThisNotATing (talk) 20:47, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The place to request page protection is WP:RPP; requests can also be added using WP:Twinkle. However, vandalism taking place once a month isn't generally regarded as significant enough to warrant protection. Editors will just have to more closely monitor pages for vandalism. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:35, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
