Under control of the Mexican Mafia? Not quite.[edit]

More like extorted. The control the Mexican Mafia has over LA gangs is that they extort drug money from them in exchange for protection in prison, and/or the gang being put on a list to be murdered. It always cracks me up when people talk about the Mexican Mafia controlling gangs. Does LA really look under control to you? If the Mexican Mafia really sought to control these gangs, you'd have to believe they'd forbid them from tagging walls and announcing their existence to the public and law enforcement, alike. Did Cosa Nostra send its young apprentices out to spray paint their names on walls? The Mexican Mafia couldn't give a rat's you know what about controlling gangs. They just want the drug money, and enforce a policy to collect that money with an iron fist. Nothing more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.32.77.176 (talk) 20:06, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed: original members being from Mexico?[edit]

Many historians of LA gangs have also said that LA's original Latino gangs around downtown, which may include Toonerville, based in Atwater village and So. Glendale, were made up of Mexican-Americans that not only didn't allow Mexican immigrants into their gangs, but also despised them. Some of these same historians have said that the 18th st. gang was made up of mostly Mexican immigrants that were rejected from other Downtown Chicano gangs that didn't allow Mexican immigrants. Whoever submitted that Toonerville is made up of immigrants from Jalisco, Mexico, please cite a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.94.8.117 (talk) 19:32, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
