Production figures[edit]

The article claims "In 2003, sixty million Tootsie Rolls and twenty million Tootsie Pops were produced every day." Doesn't that sound a bit high? 80 million candies per DAY. That's 29.2 BILLION candies per year, or about 5 for every single human on this earth. I certainly don't eat 5 per year, and I suspect the great majority of people in third world countries have eaten any. That means there would have to be people eating thousands of the things. Does anyone have some data to back that figure up? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.85.243.216 (talk) 13:26, 19 November 2009 (UTC) i likef ried chiken —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.207.224.104 (talk) 01:25, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

True the production numbers may be high and even a little inflated, there are people out there who eat more than 5 a year. I myself prbobly eat about 10 or 15 a year. Remember some people do eat alot of Tootsie products like children. They probobly eat about 40 or 50 a year. And remember the candies may either be unedible or just not sold. Im sure this number doesnt take into account the number of candies not fit for selling.

Although this number is sourced, it does not hold up to scrutiny. Using average prices for bulk Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Pops, that number of candies would generate about $1.6 billion per year in revenue. I suspect that the author is off by a factor of ten in each number, but that is original research. 6 million Rolls and 2 million Pops per day would be about $160 million in revenue, out of $300 million in total annual revenue for the company (which has many other products). – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:39, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unclear[edit]

"A superstition of the same wrapper" ... which wrapper? The indian star? The three circles? Need clarified.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.117.175.148 (talk) 18:35, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I assume this was vandalism[edit]

Removed this from rumors section because it sounds like vandalism , but since I've often noticed that there's nothing so stupid that someone won't believe it, I'm posting it here:

There is a legend among Tootsie Pop consumers. The legend says that if one licks to the center of a Tootsie Pop without biting the Tootsie Pop (that's considered cheating to the Gods of the Tootsie Roll) a strange encounter will ensue. An Acapella group called "We are the Words, We are the Instruments", will float down from the skies wearing transcongressional indian headdresses and begin consuming large amounts of pork in front of complete strangers. "We are the Words, We are the Instruments" will also scream the lyrics, some in high pitch and others in very deep voices, to the song "You are my Sunshine". .[citation needed].

For the past few years, my class has done the experiment "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop" and no encounters have occurred. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.118.230.184 (talk) 19:43, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The little bit about the Kickstarter campaign...[edit]

  • I feel it should be deleted. The Kickstarter campaign in question is clearly a poor joke, and doesn't appear to have nearly enough attention for it to be considered relevant. 58.169.103.92 (talk) 01:09, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Licks[edit]

I'd never heard the lick question, and have never had one of these candies as far as I know, but http://sciencefriday.com/video/07/06/2015/the-lollipop-hypothesis.html says 1,000 (not 42) is the answer. Kdammers (talk) 18:04, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Flavors[edit]

The Tootsie Pop page does not mention the flavor Root Beer, but I have found an advertisement from 1938 that includes the Root Beer flavor. It can be seen as page 46 of the scan at https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=64750 . That ad also gives the product name as Tootsie Filled Pops. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonDMilne (talkcontribs) 12:01, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
