I have tried to improve the technical accuracy of this article--it still needs a lot of work. I did not feel the explanation of how torsional vibration is generated in the crankshafts of internal combustion engines was technically accurate and therefore re-wrote this section.

There was also a section in regards to "dampeners" and "dampers". I agree that the term "dampeners" is not technically accurate, but I did not think it belonged in this section.

Torsional Vibration[edit]

A section is also needed to explain what vibration "orders" are. As in what "first order", "second order", et al to "sixth order" vibrations are. I've seen this come up many time in other forums regarding engines and I have a poor understanding of this subject. It would be nice if an knowledgeable person can come in and expand on this.````

Much like astronomers divide the distance between planets into astronomical units (AU,the distance between the sun and the earth), a vibration analyst uses the frequency of the primary shaft (engine rpm for example) to divide the frequency spectrum. the shock absorber doesnt do anything but keep the wheel on the ground when hitting bumps. its the springs and control arm bushings that absorb the shock.

Added the concept of 'distance' on the shaft length to the discussion. Without this, there is no torsional vibration.

I intend to expand on rotational torque curve and the discussion of harmonics when time permits, and feel the Harmonic Balancer section should be moved out to Harmonic Balancer article, which appears in need of serious edit.

If there are reasons why Harmonic Balancer section should be kept here, please let me know by a note on this talk page. --Yiba (talk) 04:04, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks MSteinberger. I have found the Engine balance article to be in need of a complete revision, much much more so than the current state of torsional vibration article. As "engine balance" is such a large subject, I've been thinking about how to tackle it, and I had forgotten about torsional vibration.
