Slight imbalance

While I understand that the Iraq war is important to many here, I think that this article should be really beefed up outside of the oil-for-food aspects... This sounds like making an article on Ford and mentioning solely that such or such of its models was defective. David.Monniaux 12:57, 31 March 2005 (UTC)

I agree. This article seems quite far from having a NPOV. 132.204.185.167 (talk) 17:39, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
I concur. More about what Total does wrong. 12.151.160.30 (talk) 13:38, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Well I think it's important when talking about a multinational corporation to talk about its operations and even its questionable practices, it would also be imbalanced not to include that information. -anon. 20:52, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Still, the Iraq War thing looks a bit like a cheap jab at Total. Maybe it should be fleshed out a bit. The Burma part should probably be more balanced, too... it levels a fairly grave accusation without any references. Bz2 14:59, 11 June 2005 (UTC)
I do agree that the Oil for Food section needs to be expanded, a lot. But given that Total Oil has been referred to by Burmese democracy leaders as the "main supporter of the military regime," it's hard to present a 'more balanced' Burma perspective. It's not going to be pleasant no matter how you put it. -anon 12:17, 22 June 2005 (UTC)
It is my understanding that Total is accused of not boycotting Burma. There are no serious charges of active support, although one might argue that investing in a country is equivalent to supporting it. 80.168.14.138 (talk) 14:10, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
No Total do activly support the regime-the first payment by Total to the regime was used to buy planes to attack civilian villages in the KAren region resulting in the deaths of many men, women, children and infants-Total said nothing. Total also employ the Tatmadaw (Burmese army) to guard their pipeline. LAst year 16 soldiers guarding the pipeline gang raped a 14 year old girl and Total have not opened an enquiry into it nor asked the Tatmadaw/Burmese government to investigate despite the issue having been raised directly with them by human right campaigners. Seems like pretty active support to me. 86.142.237.129 (talk) 19:28, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
I wanted to read about Total operations and organizational structure, instead I read a whole lot of absolutely irrelevant information and political speculations. Overal, I very much boubt neutrality of this article. 70.123.120.171 (talk) 16:37, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
Thats because youre reading yet another Wikipedia topic thats gone the way of the idiot. No proof, no focus on verifiable company operations. Texasfirebrand (talk) 01:47, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Affaire Elf

Pardon my English... I don't speak well English, that's why I don't write an article or a remark about l'affaire Elf, but I suggest a French-English-speaking to write one about it. It is a big part of Total's past... at least for French. That's the page in question: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affaire_Elf A very recent film: l'ivresse du pouvoir - http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27Ivresse_du_pouvoir - The famous "juge d'instruction": eva joly 82.234.10.207 (talk) 00:37, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Germany

Cannot verify the statements about Total's operations in Germany, altough there was a big scandal in Germany (called Leuna affair) --deltazero 23:07, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the French Mitterrand led Government wanted to get their hands on the more than 2500 vacated Minol gas station allottments all over the former East Germany, without paying the original owners of course. I was one of these. They could not say that openly, so Kohl und Mitterrand drew up a story that elf Aquitaine was going to take the Leuna refinery only if they could get the Minol gas station allottments. Legislation was enacted that declared the rights of the original owners null and void. These allottments, worth 3.78 Billion Deutschmarks in 1994, passed into the hands of elf Aqiutaine, not forgetting to thank the CDU party through their Swiss bank accounts. BP had expressed interest in Leuna, too, but the French-German Axis of Evil Corruption did not allow putting it up for tender. The French government then privatised elf Aquitaine, which subsequently became TotalFinaElf and is now TOTAL SA. They did not pay for MY land in the former East Berlin, so they are thieves, rolling in stolen assetts. The contract between Saddam Hussein and one of the above mentioned French Oil Companies did not come into effect (according to Forbes Magazine), due to US intervention in 2003. Details on Saddam Hussein and Jacques Chirac's friendship are best researched through search engines: Chirac+ Saddam Hussein 144.138.152.122 (talk) 05:01, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Much as I sympathise with your predicament, I cannot find any material to support your statements about the property issues surrounding the Minol transfer. I have researched German and French sources as well. The German-related section should therefore remain restricted, IMHO, to verifiable statements made in the press about the Leuna Scandal. This is primarily a matter for the Elf Aquitaine article, but deserves brief mention in the Total article as some of the court decisions were made after Total inherited the problem. If you would like the property-rights material to go back in, can you please quote some reputable and verifiable sources? (German is OK too!) Caravaca 05:36, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

The following search words, in a variety of combinations, give parts of the events: Kohl, Mitterrand, omerta, Leisler Kiep, Holger Ludwig Pfahls, Eva Joly, elf Aquitaine, Lois Floch Le Prigent, Andre Guelfi, Bertossa+CDU, Leuna Minol corruption. Harvard has a bibliography in the context of corruption where I spotted a heading on bagman Andre Guelfi. The British Guardian also had small mentionings. There were two Bundestag enquiries. One report is my possesion but the web of people is extensive. Generally speaking, the Bundestag drags out enquiries where a high probability of adverse findings exists until shortly before an election. So by the time a report comes out, there is an new election campaign, and everybody wants to move on, so there is no clean up. This strategy was, for instance, successfully applied to Langemann, who had botched the Israeli hostess matter during the Munich Olympics. Spiegel no longer updated the Elf Aquitaine/Leuna/Minol topic (which ran under the name of Donation Affair) after Augstein's passing, but the old articles may still be accessible. There is also a book 'Zwei gegen alle' which tells the story of two courageous prosecutors.

On the English language net, the topic does not have priority. The German language net is kind of self-censored; everyone needs to quote someone. As this also applies to the FIRST person, and high penalties exist if you cannot point to someone else who has witten it before you, it ensures that such topics remains unwritten, with the exception of very small snippets. When something happened to you, you must also find a first person to quote. By being the benefittor of the elf Aquitaine sting/strategy, Total operates from a fraudulently aquired assett base. 'Stealing' of land has a particular problem because the victim can always look at the land and the perpetrator, as opposed to stealing a car which perishes after a while. There is/was also something on the French language net, (to which the above writer's query re Affaire Elf refers), but my French is no longer fluent enough to do extensve reading there. 121.209.49.198 (talk) 02:10, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

More details about the sting: Beyond my loss, TOTAL SA continues to be in the possession of those fraudulently aquired assetts. The entry here is therefore valid. If we were to leave it all in the elf Aquitaine section, we would make the topic historic, since elf Aquitaine does not exist any more. The name change facilitated a distance from the sting and they would have duped us successfully.

Justice has not prevailed; there are victims like me whose health and life have been adversely affected by these governments abusing their power: wangling MY land to elf Aquitaine. When someone has a stolen car it has to be returned to its rightful owners, why is a multinational company with 'stolen' land treated any differently and a victim impact statement challenged? Could I communicate with someone who is in the loop?

Corruption rarely leaves evidence beyond the victims, only when someone makes a mistake. With French and German secret service involvement in the Leuna-Minol- elf Aquitaine-sting (proof: Holger-Ludwig Pfahls) that would require cooperation from 'the system'. As shown below, many efforts have been made to keep the truth hidden.

This victim, who is the 'smoking gun', has collected some facts, which came out in small bits and bytes over the years to form this picture: They applied various techniques to hide that 2.550 vacated Minol allottments, worth more than 3 Billion DM in 1994, including my parcel, came to elf Aquitaine without paying the rightful owners.

1. Technique document shredding. The ex-Chancellor's staff shredded the Leuna-Minol documents before a new Chancellor moved in. By law, there should have been copies in a government department, but they had vanished.

2. Technique censorship: Germans who write about it on the net are threatened with confiscating computers by the censors. (I offered an article containing my FACTS but they were too afraid. They only quote small bits from newspapers now.)

3. Technique misleading information: Kohl, who called the sting 'Chancellor matter', successfully duped everyone when saying that elf Aquitaine would take the Leuna refinery only if they could get the Minol allottments thrown in. The real profit, however, was in these Minol allottments. So they put the job situation of Leuna in the foreground as adiversion. When you can get an allottment package worth 3 billions for putting 10 % in Swiss Bank accounts (see below), it is worth a lie here and there. They made sure that everybody talked about Leuna jobs to distract from the Minol allottments. The refinery was kind of worthless at the time, outdated and environmentally unsound, but was propped up massively with taxpayers' funds later. This way, elf Aquitaine, now TOTAL SA, profiteered both ways through 'Chancellor matter'.

4. Technique intimidation: Done to two Augsburg prosecutors. I read about a book called 'Zwei gegen alle' (Two against everybody), but could not find it again now; maybe it has been banned.

5. Ostrich Technique: Don't look at the documents that have not been shredded. Geneva prosecutor Bernard Bertossa sent many files about millions in numbered accounts (sources never explained, too much to have been obtained by honest means) to Germany, but then complained 'Why do the Germans have anti corruption laws, if they do not intend to use them'. After that Bertossa was transferred.

6. Ensure ostrich technique covers the whole of the political system: French Judge Eva Joly conducted elf Aquitaine court cases and investigations for six years, sent all the documentation to Germany, but of course, the data were never used. Her words on Frankfurt/Main TV on the 8th October 2003 when her book came out on the Frankfurt bookfair: "But here, all investigations were blocked. There were no consequences for the participants. The Germans have all the documentation, but despite that there were no real investigations. The reasons must obviously be in the political system of Germany."

7. Former tennis star Boris Becker was so disgusted with Germany that he moved to Switzerland and said on BBC TV (Parkinson Show): 'Why don't they go after the ex-Chancellor and these people?'

8. There were a couple of suicides and sudden deaths without subsequent autopsies among the people in the circle of dealings, but I have not kept a list of what I read.

9. If Germans were to prosecute corruption, they would admit it exists. After the death of Spiegel magazine founder Rudolf Augstein, their CDU corruption webpage was no longer updated. Germans like cleanliness so everybody will cooperate and take a cut to obscure issues and cover tracks.

10. The only thing they prosecute is tax evasion. If they find money/revenue for which taxes have not been paid, they threaten with prosecution and publicity. Therefore, deals including confidentiality clauses will be made with the tax office which ensures that nobody will ever hear about the matter and the statistics look clean.

11. The Germans also used the language issue to avoid investigations in Germany: Evidence from Geneva and Paris would have been supplied in French. If the authorities refuse to make funds available for translation into German, investigations do not happen.

The elf Aquitaine sting has left its mark even in the German language: The culture of kickbacks, bribes, thievery and general shonkiness in government/private enterprise interactions is now termed 'System Elf" in academia. There is also the new word 'Unification Criminality". But academia creating words falls in the category 'paper is patient'.

My webpage has recommendations for search words but this writing is about the sting, not directing traffic to my webpage. As long as injustice prevails, and TOTAL SA remain the benefitors of stolen assetts like mine, the topic should not be closed, here or elsewhere. Should TOTAL SA ever pay for what they took off me, I'll come to revisit with my delete button.

Further, there is the question of what democracy is supposed to be good for if it produces rulers like Kohl and Mitterrand, plus their sucessors who do not rectify the wrongs. I would sell my right to vote for justice if I could. I have been trained as a journalist and adapt my writing styles to the topic and readership. I can distinguish between ramblings and facts, even though in this case I am also a participant. 144.138.152.244 (talk) 03:44, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

The source are my files from the Government Department in Berlin. They denied me all rights to have the land returned to us, compensation or share in the project that Elf Aquitaine was undertaking. They stated that I did not have 20 Million to invest, which meant that they had to delete all my claims to the land of my father and grandmother. In Germany, it is not really possible to write about this corruption, they like to look clean and dirty stuff is swept under the carpet. In the English speaking media, there is not much interest in unification criminality. I am the victim, I am the source. Corruption is not a victimless crime. You can also go to Berlin, Prenzlauer Promenade 191 was the land (824 sqm), now incorporated into No. 190. The land was valued at about 2 Million DM in 1994, which made it impossible for me to take it through the courts, due to costs. Self-representation is only possible in a small claims court.I am bilingual. 147.69.101.182 (talk) 13:38, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Any Total products in the USA

Does total operating any service stations or sell any consumer products in the USA ?? Where are most of its sales, Europe only ?? Please mention brands that no longer exist (i.e. Sinclair) in the past 10-20 years. Please delete this comment after respond to this request. SystemBuilder (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 17:29, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Total just bought the assets of Exxon Mobil in Puerto Rico, previously they had bought the assets of other service station chains. Perhaps they will use this as a bridge to get into the US. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 15.227.137.70 (talk) 19:51, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Relevant to these 7 year old comments, I've added some information to the History section of the article. Total bought into the US retail market no later than 1980 (I think they bought APCO in 1977, but trying to find good evidence), continued expanding under several names, rebranded 2600 US locations to Total in 1993, then sold all US retail operations to Ultramar Diamond Shamrock in 1997. As of the Total S.A. 2014 annual report, Total has no retail presence in the US.GeoGreg (talk) 19:57, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Seems to be an article of criticisms rather than general article about Total S.A

I was browsing and came across this article, seems to give just a cursory nod what the company does, and then goes on to list everything thats wrong with it, unfortunaetly i know nothing about Total or i would add some detail myself, but this seems unblanaced Xenutu (talk) 16:26, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah. Especially the Burma section. Was this written by a left-wing anti-corporate crank? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.217.89.21 (talk) 08:16, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, these activities speak for themselves. If the company has done some positive things as well, nothing's stopping people from putting that up there; however, just because many points are negative doesn't mean the article lacks neutrality. Total's activities in Burma are and have been highly detrimental for the most part, and it would be ridiculous not to put that up here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dhero (talkcontribs) 00:39, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Imbalance in article

The article lacks any criticism of the company in comparison to other articles. It appears they were removed long ago. However, to have this lack of criticism makes the company seem "better" than the other oil companies. And we certainly know this is usually not the case. Can someone introduce some criticism and sources to back it up? Thanks. Allan kuan1992 (talk) 06:16, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Deleted copyvio material from Organization section

A large section of the Organization section was copied almost verbatim from Total's corporate website (see www.total.com/en/group/activities/activities_871.htm). I have deleted this material per WP:COPYVIO. The facts from that site may be added back into the article, but the language and structure of the copyrighted material must not be used. Baileypalblue (talk) 20:58, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

N.B.: The perpetrator of the copyvio, User:Commiecet also deleted a large chunk of the article. I have restored it, and will do some minor copyediting. If this material is unacceptable, please feel free to remove it; be careful not to repeat the copyvio while you are doing so. Baileypalblue (talk) 21:27, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

For discussion

Hello!

I'm Patrick Antoine, Total’s Community Manager. Some content in this article seems inaccurate. I would like to offer some suggestions to improve it by adding a few factual corrections.

I will post my suggestions to this Talk Page so you can evaluate them and use them to update articles as you see fit.

I will get back to you soon!

Finance and Senior Management section updates

Hello again,

It’s Patrick, the Community Manager for Total. I’d like to make a few suggestions to improve the Total S.A. Wikipedia page.

My first suggestion is to update the “Senior management” section. The figures for CEO Christophe de Margerie’s compensation are from 2009 and can be updated. I’d also like to suggest adding two sub-sections in this category, one for the Group’s “Board of Directors” and another for its “Executive Committee.”

Secondly, Total’s Wikipedia page is missing financial information for the Group. It would be helpful to create a “Financial Results” section to come right after the “Organization” section. I suggest giving the Group’s financial results (sales and net income) for each quarter of last year, as well as the first quarter of this year.

Please let me know what you think of these suggestions.

What is Total doing in sustainability engineering?

I would like the major fossil fuel company articles to indicate how they intend to transition to carbon-neutral fuels such as this work and "power to gas." I need to know whether they support emerging chemical engineering research such as catalysts for carbon-neutral transportation fuels, whether they are working on compressed air energy storage such as [1] and [2], airborne wind turbines such as [3], and on extracting carbon from seawater such as this PARC method in order to solve their long-term corporate viability issues. I do not believe it is possible to have a truly balanced article on a fossil fuel company without some indication of their long term prospects. Tim AFS (talk) 04:22, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

I also need to know whether they are developing electrical grid energy storage in their existing expended oil and gas caverns along with mineshafts and mines for pumped-storage hydroelectricity where ordinary hydroelectric power is unavailable. Tim AFS (talk) 09:10, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

TGIF

TGIF redirects to Total. However, TGIF appears nowhere on the page. Unfortunately, I cant see when the redirect was made and by whom, otherwise I d question it. TGIF no longer exists but is called Teréga now. It cant easily be researched from what I see. Teréga just states that TGIF has been around for 70 years.

TGIF either needs to be added or deserves its own page, because Terega is in the news now.--Wuerzele (talk) 14:49, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
