Analog audio gear[edit]

Could analog reel-to-reel tape recorders with no internal amplifiers or equalization circuits be considered a transport? Gutten på Hemsen (talk) 19:36, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A reel-to-reel tape recorder is one of the orginal recording transports. Amplifiers and other electronic circuits do not make a difference. They would not be considered part of the transport itself. The original Ampex 8 track recorder was built on an Ampex data recorder transport built for the US military to record flight balistics for missile test launches. The hard part was getting the 8 magnetic gaps alligned in the head assembly. Ampex had one woman who could do this really well. She built all the early head assemblies.
