Gauge Conversion[edit]

Some google searches reveal plans in Ghana for conversion to 1435mm gauge. Is this sensible? Is this really going ahead?

The three surrounding countries (four including Benin) use 1000mm which incurs a Break of gauge. Nigeria may or may not be changing from Ghana's gauge to 1435mm.

If the railways in these countries ever meet there will be a mess.

  1. Stay with 1067mm
  2. Change to 1000mm and have 4 or 5 or more countries the same.
  3. Change to 1435mm which is the world standard and link to Libya's ambitious plans for a trans-sahara link as well as Nigeria's.
  4. Change to dual gauge as required. Some dual gauge needs 3 rails, others need 4 rails.
  5. Overcome break of gauge with:
    1. Containers
    2. Variable Gauge Axles
    3. Bogie exchange
    4. Piggyback.
  6. Transship as a flexible last resort; labour intensive, but Africa does have a lot a labour to spare.
