A trolling motor should or cannot be used as prime propulsion system for a recreational boat. A larger electric outboard can be used for this purpose and can also bring a boat on plane. So it would be incorrect to merge this section to Troling motor

[edit]

As electric outboards evolve and get more powerful they will diverge further from trolling motors

[edit]

Trolling motors do what their name suggests, they are designed for silent propulsion around fishing locations and not designed for passage making. You will always find people who try to re-purpose technology, therefore it will almost certainly be possible to cite substantial voyages made using trolling motors and I have no doubt that some fishermen use small petrol outboards for trolling but there are better ways to achieve their goals.

In Australia it is already possible to buy a 30HP electric outboard from Aquawatt. Parsun electric outboards are available in versions between 4HP and 10HP. Torqeedo are probably the largest manufacturer of electric outboards and have models up to about 5HP.

All these examples are substantially more powerful than a trolling motor and all are designed as primary propulsion for passage making/cruising.

As with electric cars we can expect this technology to move rapidly forward and for the major manufacturers to bring powerful models to market in the near future.

The biggest drawback for electric outboards right now is battery technology, which is currently either too expensive or too heavy for mass deployment; as this problem is solved for the automative industry (who have the funding) the marine industry will be able to take advantage.

The electric outboard is likely to be the enabling factor for the transition to electric boating, re-engining a boat with electric power is as simple as hanging a new motor on the back and finding somewhere to put the batteries.
