Regiment Or Battalion?

Some of the copy refers to the military organization involved first as a regiment and then as a battalion.

At some point in the film, one senior officer wants to pass on a matter "to brigade," which, hierarchically is the next higher level in the-then table of military organization, after regiment; battalion is one LOWER.

The ranking officers are correct for a regiment which is almost always commanded by a Lt. Colonel which is precisely the rank that the John Mills character has; a brigade commander would generally be a full colonel while a battalion commander is generally a major.

I'd have to sit through the movie again and I gave it away to a now ex-girlfriend!

British/Commonwealth Armies were and are different from the US.

Historically after the Cardwell reforms Infantry Regiments had two battalions one for home service and one abroad with Officers and Men sent in drafts to make up the numbers abroad. During the world wars Regiments had 3 4 5 or more battalions. The infantry regiment is not a tactical formation but a family within which officers and men can be posted. Currently for example The Rifles is a regiment with 5 Regular and one Territorial battalions. The Parachute Regiment has 3 Regular and one territorial battalion.

A Battalion is a Major Unit commanded by a Lt Col. Major Units have a Commanding Officer (CO) normally a Lt Colonel. Companies are Minor Units with an Officer Commanding (OC) who is normally a Major. Brigadiers command brigades, they are "one star" but not General Officers. A brigade may be a formation, but may also be, and in this film almost certainly is, an administrative command.

Just to confuse you further the Major Units in the Royal Armoured Corps are called Regiments but the Royal Tank Regiment is made up of a number of numbered Major Units just like an infantry regiment.

Major units in the Combat Support Arms - The Royal Regiment of Artillery but the Royal Corps of Engineers known as regiments.

The Brigade of Guards is not a brigade either administratively or tactically.

At the time the film was set the British Army was much bigger then it is now, and there were many more different regiments often with only two battalions.

By the way the term enlisted is not used in the British Army the term Other Rank or Soldier indicating that a person is not a Comissioned Officer.

I have never served in the British army and I am not an expert on it, but here is what I do know. The unit in the film is a battalion, which would normally be commanded by a lieutenant-colonel, with a major as second-in-command. I was a little bit surprised myself to hear the occasional reference to matters being referred upwards to brigade, when strictly speaking the next level up would be the regiment. I think the explanation probably is that in practice the role of the regiment was to some extent ceremonial, and at that time it could be very common to have a regiment consisting of two battalions, one stationed in Britain and the other overseas. So for some practical administrative purposes, e.g. deciding if a senior officer was to be court-martialled, the next level up was the brigade, which might have control of a number of battalions in a geographical area. No, Pat. Four battalions make a brigade. A regiment is not an operational unit. It is the entity that recruits and deploys men to its various battalions, which may reach double figures in time of war. Valetude (talk) 23:42, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

I think we may be talking at cross purposes, you appear to be confirming the point I was making. I was never disputing that during WW2 the number of battalions in a regiment could rise substantially. PatGallacher (talk) 20:51, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
