Major Revert (04:58, 16 July 2006 (UTC))[edit]

I have just made a revert to this page covering several versions, back to Irishguy's version of June 11. I reverted the change of the page into a redirect , and while I was at it, removed two non-notable (red-linked) individuals.

The change to a redirect (by anonymous IP 65.122.45.112) was not discussed here, and no rationale has been given for why Tyler, Texas is any better for this article title than other cities of that name, a notable person (like U.S. President Tyler), or anything else named Tyler. The anon editor has edited several articles relating to Tyler, Texas, and that may be a factor.

Regardless of motivation, I think a dab page makes much more sense here. Please discuss future major changes of this nature before destroying large amounts of work for a redirect. --SuperNova |T|C| 04:58, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent vandalism[edit]

Out of the last 50 edits, 24 (48%) have been vandalism, 44 (88%) if you also include the corresonding reverts. I tried and and failed to get the page protected - [1] -- John (Daytona2 · Talk · Contribs) 16:02, 8 February 2008 (UTC) Tyler also means golfer in French history. Anonomyous Project Tyler Wikileaks crossed with BitTorrent clone.[edit]

I'm going to add a section for organisations and projects named Tyler to put in a link to a page for the aforementioned Anon Wikileaks clone Tyler. Unless anyone has any reasons why I shouldn't ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ultan42 (talkcontribs) 10:07, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose: In the case of all the other names shown in the table, it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to argue that the family name was the primary topic. The one exception, it would appear, is Clinton (and I must admit to being surprised that didn't redirect to Bill Clinton). That is not the case with Tyler. None of the other entries on the Tyler (disambiguation) page have a cat in hell's chance of being considered the primary topic, and most people inputting simply Tyler are likely to be searching for the family name. Skinsmoke (talk) 10:07, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Despite
? If Clinton would redirect to Bill Clinton it would be a strong case of recentism. Pedro Gonzalez-Irusta (talk) 17:13, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Replace "tyler" with Tyler (disambiguation), displacing this page to Tyler (name) -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 23:01, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: The list you have given of Tyler articles only emphasises the point that this is the primary topic. With the exception of a little-known city in Texas, they are all insignificant micro-communities or have a natural disambiguator as part of their name (such as Tyler County). Incidentally, to argue recentism in the case of Bill Clinton, 11 years after he ceased to be president, is pushing the definition of the term recentism to its limits and beyond. Skinsmoke (talk) 05:40, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. A brief survey of existing incoming links indicates that enough people are thinking of Tyler, Texas to prevent the given name/surname from being the clear primary topic. bd2412 T 13:02, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Any figures on those incoming links? Skinsmoke (talk) 06:46, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unisex?[edit]

Tyler is listed as a Unisex name on this page. Unisex would imply not that we can find two women named Tyler, but that there are a statistically significant number of women named Tyler. That's like taking the article on "North" and redirecting it to an disambiguity page because "it's also a name," simply because Kanye and Kim named their kid "North West." Comments?--Mrcolj (talk) 18:28, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Derivation of name[edit]

The only sources I can find that resemble the claim the tyler is Old English for door keeper of an inn are Þyle and Tyler_(Masonic). The latter repeats the claim here, but again, with no evidence given. I can't find tyler or tyle listed in the online Bosworth Toller Anglo-Saxon dictionary, only Þyle.--Swahilli (talk) 09:11, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

– The name cannot be considered the WP:PTOPIC for "Tyler". Going by page views from the previous 365 days, Tyler, Texas gets more than six times the page views of this article about the name. Thus the article about the name fails the "usage" criterion for PTOPIC; considering that the city in Texas was founded in 1846, long-term significance for the city is unlikely to be low either. In addition, you also have other competitors for primary topic status, such as Tyler Technologies whose page views are close to that of the name. feminist (talk) 12:22, 19 February 2020 (UTC) Relisting. Steel1943 (talk) 18:08, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support first, oppose second. The nom is correct about the name. However, we need to go a step further and make Tyler a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT to Tyler, Texas. The Texas article gets more pageviews than all the other "Tyler" articles combined. And as the nom points out, the Texas city has long-term significance as well. Dohn joe (talk) 16:24, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as proposed incoming external links might end up onto the wrong place if we redirect to the city. Furthermore readers and editors are used to seeing US cities with the state included and therefore are more likely to find them that way. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:28, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as proposed. I'd disagree with making Tyler a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT to Tyler, Texas, as I'd say there's NO primary topic for "Tyler" on its own. Paintspot Infez (talk) 18:55, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support first, oppose second – upon further reading, it does not appear Tyler has a primary topic and certainly the Texas city isn't the primary topic. Tyler should be a dab page. cookie monster (2020) 755 16:33, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    Huh? That's what I proposed. feminist (talk) 16:52, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@CookieMonster755: If you meant for the disambiguation page to be at the basename of "Tyler", that's what the nominator proposed. If that's what you meant, you might want to edit your response to reflect that you "Support as proposed". Saying that you "Support first, oppose second" means that you'd oppose the second move of moving the disambiguation page to the basename. Paintspot Infez (talk) 17:51, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support only first with a primary redirect to the city in Texas due to pageviews, at least. The fact that the city will be at Tyler, Texas anyway doesn't at all preclude a primary redirect, as we've seen many many times throughout the years (see Talk:Charlotte (disambiguation) or Talk:Raleigh (disambiguation)). Red Slash 15:28, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is why I hate WP:USPLACENAMES. What a ridiculous outcome of a nonsensical guideline. The name of the county is Tyler not Tyler, Texas. Why are we bending over backwards to obey USPLACENAMES. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 12:57, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 18:27, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note that my support is for the disambiguation page at the base title. I don't consider the city to be dominant enough to be the WP:PTOPIC here. feminist (talk) 03:04, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
