Naming Conventions

[edit]

There is a disgraceful lack of consistency in usage of names throughout this article. I suggest whoever contributed to it should read up on Irish naming conventions. For example, when referring to a clan, the form Uí Cheallaigh should be used, Ó Ceallaigh refers solely to male lineage. There is also inconsistency with the use of O'Kelly/Kelly, O'Madden/Madden. Since these are all anglicisations of original clan names it would make sense to consistently use the irish form as during this period Irish/gaelic was still the primary language spoken. I would recommend using the clan form Uí Cheallaigh/Uí Mhadadháin/Uí Mhúdaigh/Uí Neachtáin/Uí Dhomhnalláin etc. - I'm not even sure where Ó Mullaly could be coming from, this is a complete bastardisation - consider Ó Mullalaigh as a likely more correct version. If necessary in the Main Families section the modern anglicised equivalents could be specified. This inconsistency is enough to throw credibility out on this article altogether. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.120.161.6 (talk) 09:06, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

this from the same ip (lol bank of ireland) that contributed this. badmachine (talk) 14:35, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be ridiculous. An IP address is not a person, there are as many as 15,000 people behind that IP address, it is a proxy server. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.120.161.6 (talk) 13:49, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

O Madadhan

[edit]

I doubt that the "O Madadhan" here refers to the "Maddan" that is linked to here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maddan. This Maddan is a King of Briton, not a tribal leader of Ireland. I think that O'Madadhan should be translated to Madden. Madden was one of the "14 tribes of Galway" and was based in Portumna.

Okay, must do that. However, the O Madahans were NOT one of the Tribes of Galway! Fergananim 14:28, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Name of page

[edit]

Shouldn't the name of the page be the Gaelic Uí Maine since it's an Irish topic, with a redirect from Hy-Many? Bookgrrl 18:31, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It definitely should. Also there is a disgraceful inconsistency throughout the article. It should be Uí Máine, not Ui Maine, Uí Maine or Ui Máine. That goes regardless of the tribe in question or whether it's the kingdom or descendants. Really sloppy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.120.161.6 (talk) 08:47, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The title of the page is still incorrect. It should be "Uí Mháine". The "a" in "Máine" should always take a síneadh fada. When "Máine" is preceded by "Uí", it takes the tuiseal ginideach form, i.e. "Mháine". JD2 (talk) 12:21, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Families

[edit]

It would be nice to have a chart of how the families are related, I am however to unskilled and don't know enough.--Conor Fallon (talk) 21:17, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What "Norseman" ?!?

[edit]

The article, last sentence seconf paragraph, now reads "The first major conflict the Uí Maine were involved in was in the late 700’s with the arrival of the “Norseman” who took over vast parts of the areas surrounding Hy Many." What does this mean? There is a reference of sorts, but the link is dead. No “Norseman” or Norse group ever managed to take over "vast parts of the areas surrounding", most certainly not "in the late 700’s". Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:22, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • M1187.4

The rock of Lough Key was burned by lightning. Duvesa, daughter of O'Heyn, and wife of Conor Mac Dermot, Lord of Moylurg, with seven hundred (or seven score) others, or more, both men and women, were drowned or burned in it in the course of one hour.

M1187.5 Gilla-Isa Gelasius, the son of Oilioll O'Breen, Sech-Abb Prior of Hy Many, a historian, scribe, and poet, died.

DNA results?

[edit]

The O'Kelly of Ui Maine belong to the SNP branch FGC6545+, and the only other surname group is Trainor. Where is the rest of the Ui Maine population?

Dal Cuinn origin

[edit]

This is the pedigree of the O Ceallaigh line form the 12th century Book of Leinster:

GENELACH .H. MANI. [from the Book of Leinster]:

[?Tadgh Dubh?] m Aeda m Diarmata m Thaidc m Murchada m Aeda m Cellaig m Fhiannachtai m Ailella m Inrechtaig m Dluthaig m Fhithchellaig m Dicolla m Eogain Fhind m Cormaic m Corpri Chruim m Fheradaig m Lugdach m Dallain m Bresail m Mani m Echach m Domnaill m Fhiachach Sroptine m Carpri Lifechair.

This like the earlier pedigrees of Laud 610 and Rawlinson B.502 have the Ui Maine line descending from Echach m Domnaill m Fhiachach Sroptine m Carpri Lifechair and not Clan Coll da Crioch.

Matching the Book of Rights were the lands of Ui Briuin, Ui Fiachrach and Ui Maine are free from tribute. 2601:5C0:8300:21E0:8506:B06F:3F16:F15D (talk) 01:47, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
