(South of Kalamazoo)

South of the Shaver Road intersection, US 131 is not and has never been up to full freeway status. It has plenty of at-grade highway intersections. Between Shaver Road and Schoolcraft it does not even have limited access.

North of Schoolcraft, US 131 is configured so that a direct route south of the freeway could be an extension of the freeway.

The Constantine bypass is only single-carriage in each direction, but it has plenty of space for a parallel lane of carriageway. It has limited access (the highway and at least enough space for a parallel set of lanes is fenced off and has limited-access signs) it looks as if it could be upgraded to full freeway as was done with a bypass of Charlotte, Michigan in which a two-lane expressway bypass (originally US 27) was upgraded to Interstate 69.

US 131 has light traffic south of Three Rivers. There may be no obvious need to transform this section of US 131 to freeway status unless as a pork-barrel appropriation or as a bypass of Schoolcraft. Interstate 94 connects very well to and from the west to US 31 to South Bend and to and from the east to Interstate 69 and US 23 to such cities as Fort Wayne and Toledo, respectively.
