Alignment details south of Petersburg

[edit]
  • 12-1921-01 47: recommended that Warfield [between the Nottoway River and Alberta] be replaced by Smoky Ordinary [between the Nottoway River and Edgerton] in the description, "as this is a more direct route and combines with Route 12 for a distance of about four miles" - thus it had already joined at Lawrenceville, and this was four more miles of overlap
  • 01-1922-03 28-32: the General Assembly recommended that the road south from South Hill to North Carolina be added, but the toll bridge presents a problem
  • 08-1922-01 7: the state cannot take over the road south from South Hill until the toll is removed
  • 03-1923-01 15-16: people were willing to sell the Roanoke River bridge on SR 122 south of South Hill; the road cannot be maintained by the state until the toll is eliminated
  • 05-1923-01 9: the SHC declined the offer to buy the bridge south of South Hill
  • 12-1923-01 20: people requested that the road from the Nottoway River to South Hill [not to Lawrenceville!?] be reinstated; this was 12 miles shorter; it was one of the heaviest travelled roads in the state; the BPR had requested its re-establishment to add to the primary federal aid system, and would not approve the Lawrenceville route
  • 07-1924-01 5-6: under the law added South Hill-south to the state highway system, the state doesn't have to do anything until the bridge is taken over
  • 11-1924-02 8, 12-1924-02 6: SR 314 South Hill - northeast
  • 05-1925-01 12: Nottoway River southwest past Alberta to South Hill was established as a state highway as SR 31
  • 10-1925-02 5: Virginia endorsed North Carolina's request to add SR 32-324-12 (old SR 31) to the U.S. Highway system (so by then SR 31 went south from South Hill)
  • 01-1927-01 10: location of SR 31 south of South Hill fixed
  • 01-1927-01 13: Edgerton - Nottoway River is SR 122
  • 01-1927-01 3, 02-1927-01 6-7: south from South Hill is SR 31, but there's still a toll bridge; the state bought the bridge
