Propose restoration of deleted reference[edit]

I left the following message at User talk:74.222.220.183

Thank you for your edits to the MACKINAW. Your latest revision as of 12:14, 27 July 2013 deleted a reference to amateur radio operations in MACKINAW. From what I see this was the only reference for the ham radio paragraph. Furthermore, I found the information at reference http://ccecpsco.org/ interesting, and not "a briefest mention of the subject" (or words to that effect) as you describe. Please consider reverting your edit. Please consider becoming a registered User if you have not already done so.

NB: I did not sail in MACKINAW, nor am I a member of W8AGB, nor CCECPSCO, nor am I a Michigander.

Thank you for remembering the MACKINAW and helping to preserve our Coast Guard history. Semper Paratus Tjlynnjr (talk) 04:12, 28 July 2013 (UTC). Tjlynnjr (talk) 05:27, 28 July 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Support. Why not? That was the first link, nobody has complained in five years, and article may have local interest. Perhaps if something was brought in, rather than taken out...Sammy D III (talk) 14:51, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Concensus. Done, it's been 5 months without further comment. Semper Paratus Tjlynnjr (talk) 09:03, 3 January 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Fitzgerald sinking[edit]

Who added the Fitzgerald AND WHY???? The Mackinaw was 8 hours steaming time away from the mouth of Whitefish Bay and could not have participated in the search effort. This sick obsession needs to STOP> 67.199.215.79 (talk) 15:53, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IP,
Here is the "who" and "why" as far as I know it.
  • The material about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was added by @Sonic5421:in this edit: Special:Diff/1120203053. No edit summary.
  • I removed it in this edit: Special:Diff/1171789049. Edit summary: Because USCGC Mackinaw was not involved at all, in any way, with the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, that sinking doesn't belong in a history of the Mackinaw.
  • Sonic5421 put it back in this edit: Special:Diff/1174945841. No edit summary.
  • I moved it into its own "Unrelated history" subsection of the "Service history" section in this edit: Special:Diff/1175440017. Edit summary: Divide long "Service history" section into subsections.
  • I added an "Unreferenced section" tempate in this edit: Special:Diff/1175443179. Edit summary: Move templates warning of tone and lack of referencing from the "Service history" section, where they have mostly been corrected, to the subsections of the "Service history" section where the problems are still present.
  • I moved the subsection out of the "Service History" section into its own "Unrelated history" section with this edit: Special:Diff/1175456800. Edit summary: Move "Unrelated history" subsection out of the "Service History" section and into its own section because it is unrelated to Mackinaw's service history.
If you don't like the "Unrelated history" section, then take it out and see if anyone objects; I won't.

AP story on 11 Nov 1975, page 1 of the the The Terre Haute Tribune has the following to say: "Two Coast Guard ships in the area - Naugatuck in Sault Ste. Marie and the Mackina[w] in Cheboygan 74 miles from Sault Ste. Marie - were disabled for repairs." A paragraph earlier it mentions USCGC Woodrush was sailing for the site from Duluth, 400 miles away. I can't find any newspaper articles that mention Mackinaw being on the scene in the days after. I support removing the paragraph. --Dual Freq (talk) 22:40, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
