Spanish-American War service

[edit]

Levi Woodbury (the second so named cutter) was not designated USS Woodbury during this conflict. Woodbury was USRC. When revenue cutters were transferred from the US Treasury Department to the US Department of the Navy for wartime service the cutters retained the designation of USRC. USCG and USN records that I have researched reveal no USS designation. The USN records refer to her only as Woodbury, USCG records refer to her as USRC. This vessel was built for the US Revenue Marine Service as RMS (Revenue Marine Service) Mahoning, later renamed RMS Levi Woodbury. USRC designations came about in 1894 when USRMS became USRCS. Here are some refs:
NB: There were three cutters named Woodbury:
  • RMS Woodbury (1837) Mexican War service
  • RMS/USRC Woodbury (1863) Spanish-American War service
  • USCGC Woodbury (WSC-155) (1927)
Also note the builder, hence my special interest in this cutter.
