Opinion?

[edit]

This article states: "If U-58 had surfaced in battle ready mode, Fanning would have surely been lost." Surely? Why? Because the destroyer was American and the sub German? This doesn't appear in the DANFS entry and sounds like some contributor's opinion. Such a statement "surely" deserves a verifiable reference. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.243.164.201 (talk) 03:04, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It seems unlikely that a surfaced U boat would be much of a match for a destroyer. The destroyer would be faster, better armed, and more stable, allowing better use of its armamment. Has there ever been a case of a surfaced u-boat sinking a destroyer (other than by stealth or subtrefuge)?
