Perhaps not the whole story

the account from Britannia appears to make sense, but Anthony Birley argues that there were two Ulpii Marcelli: one who was governor circa 184 (based on Dio 72.8.2-6 & some of the recorded inscriptions), & another who was governor circa 212. (Birley, The Fasti of Roman Britain (Oxford, 1981), pp. 140-142, 164-166.) Both reconstructions -- Birley & Brassington -- have their strengths & weaknesses. And while it may require a new generation of Classical scholars to determine which of the two theories is the more likely, the fact remains there are two theories one could use to interpret the facts. -- llywrch (talk) 04:37, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
