Intro Key[edit]

Why did someone change it back to F# Major? It's clearly in A Major. Just because the note F# appears doesn't make in F# Major! It's so obvious. Come on people. All the degrees in F# Major are sharps, and there obvious uses of the note A (not A#) in the intro. F# also appears, but that's because it exists in the key of A Major!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.78.232.43 (talk) 03:31, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • F# Major isn't all sharps, C# Major is. The chord progression in the intro is D Major and then F# Major. Just because the note A appears doesn't make it A Major! A appears, but that's because it exists in the chord D Major!!! But on another note, I've noticed in the article that it was changed from D Major to F# Major and vice versa numerous times. Which one is it actually? I say D Major with an accidental A# to make the F# into a Major chord. --Kotjze 21:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • if you have a cadence of two alternating unrelated chords with no melody giving functional hints, the key simply cannot be determined. the intro is in A and F#, and that's how it is. --Punne (talk) 09:10, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • While I agree with Punne that the fact that it is only two chords alternating so no key can be completely established, the two chords it is alternating between are D major and F# major. Based on the fact that the major III chord is rather common in chord progressions, I would say the intro is in D major. This also would make sense as it shifts for the rest of the song into E major, and a key change of moving up a whole step is also a very common musical move, and makes sense to the ears. Entry for Under The Bridge[edit]

Just saying that the cap that Frusciante is wearing is a ski cap misses the intent for it to look like an indigenous headwear.

see the ear flaps on the following image:

http://www.grossereise.de/Deutsch/Bilder/Perubilder/indian_cap.jpg

In a blog locate here:

http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=3140&page=7

down the page a bit is what xrodolfox wrote:

"I am not a fan of cultural appropriation. I am from Latin America, and I think it is great that people who have Scottish roots wear kilts. However, I do think it is a bit strange for people who aren't Scottish to wear kilts. It just reminds me of when those Bolivian/Inca style hats came into vogue (those hats that cover the ears) after a RHCP's "Under The Bridge" video came out. All these people who knew nothing of Andean Culure were appripriating the "look" to be stylish."

Instead of editing the main page, I leave this for consideration, but do suggest that the article's lead sentence of the relevant paragraph be revised to read:

"Guitarist John Frusciante's playing is one of "Under the Bridge"'s most distinctive elements, recalling Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing". An iconic image from the video features Frusciante playing a recurring, melodic guitar break on a turquoise-colored Fender Jaguar in the desert while wearing a ski cap reminiscent of new world indiano costume; later, a superimposed image of an intense tatoo in mesoamerican motif covering a man's back reinforces the indiano-themed art production element of the video."

Kiedis appears shirtless before the image of the tatoo is scene, giving the impression it is his tatoo--but since I do not know that for a fact, I omit a phrase such as "Kiedis' tatoo" or similar. If it is his tatoo perhaps the editing should reflect that. cOULD ANYBODY TELL WHAT KIND OF PANTS ARE JOHN FRUSCIANTE AND FLEA WEARING IN THE UNDER THE BRIDGE VIDEO??

"It has been noted" - re the actual bridge referred to in the lyrics and its possible appearance in a subsequent RHCP video. Should there not be a citation here? I dunno how to insert the query/link for this but I'd think it seriously needs to prompt someone in the know to source it. Or delete the claim until thats done. Also, several weaselly adjectives were excised from para1.Plutonium27 16:04, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Plutonium[reply]

I remember seeing a video on YouTube where John Frusciante humorously noted that part of his guitar playing on this track is very similar to T-Rex's "Rip Off." I can't find the source anymore, nor know how to site it. Anyone else remember seeing this?

ripoff / youtube ref[edit]

It may be just a joke, but... http://youtube.com/watch?v=xZNgRn2054Y Lifelike23 00:57, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well it obviously is a joke, and its certainly not necessary to put every single thing a band member says about a song on an encyclopedia page, so this should be removed. --LeakeyJee 03:35, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weird Al Parody[edit]

Why is there no mention of the Weird Al parody of "Under the Bridge" and "Give it Away" entitled "Bedrock Anthem"? VarunRajendran 22:47, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

under the bridge in L.A.??!![edit]

The Bridge is obviosly in L.A., it makes refrence to the city of Angels and to Downtown!! The article says, Mr. Keidis has not disclosed the Actual location but we can assume its in L.A. somewhere! due to the songs statements.--Redspork02 19:58, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the cover of the single prominently features the LA City Hall (the large skyscraper in the middle of the picture). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.172.213.180 (talk) 06:41, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rodney King[edit]

My dad said that this song might have a connection to Rodney King and the L.A. riot (s) in 1990. Is it possible to incorporate this into the article?

As far as I know "Under the Bridge" does not have any connection to the riots. NSR77 T 22:10, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Plus the riots were in 1992. WesleyDodds (talk)

Frusciante "screamed inaudibly"?[edit]

In the live performances section, someone wrote frusciante "screamed inaudibly". So he screamed, but couldn't be heard? heh okay. Maybe it should be changed to "incomprehensibly" or something —Preceding unsigned comment added by Itsrainingfruit (talkcontribs) 19:28, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use of wood block[edit]

Under Music and Composition, the article states that "the silence is broken by Chad Smith's closed hi-hat and wood block struck at a moderately fast tempo". I see that this statement is cited; however, it is incorrect. Smith clearly plays rim clicks during this section, which should be apparent to any drummer who listens to the recording. Because of this, I have edited the page accordingly. Immortal Wowbagger (talk) 07:50, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that someone reverted this edit in favor of the original cited statement. While I understand that my edit was technically "original research", which doesn't hold up in comparison to "cited sources", I know of no provisions in Wikipedia's policies that address when the "reliable source" itself is possibly inaccurate. Nevertheless, since this detail is very specific and doesn't have much importance (relative to the rest of the article), I just rephrased the statement to avoid mentioning that specific detail without contradicting the original cited statement. Immortal Wowbagger (talk) 06:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't play any instruments, but I know the sounds of both a wood bock and a rim click, and I agree, the sound heard during this section is a rim click. The source is clearly inaccurate.--Kevjgav (talk) 22:28, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Change from major key to minor key[edit]

I know this is technically original research (which I know articles must not contain) but the ending clearly changes from a major key to a minor key. The information about what key the ending is in is missing from Under the Bridge#Music and composition. Also, Immortal Wowbagger is right about Chad Smith playing rim clicks and not wood block, despite the what the cited source says. I'm no musician, but I can tell the difference between the sound of a rim click and the sound of a wood block.--Kevjgav (talk) 14:36, 5 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it doesn't change from a major to a minor- its actually written based upon the minor pentatonic scale, as is the vast majority of rock. The ear is fooled into thinking that a major tonality exists because of the fact that certain jazz chords, such as add6 and Maj.7 (or add14, depending upon how you choose to think about it) are built beneath the pentatonic melodic structure. This is one of the essential differences between hard rock and its lighter counterparts. 2605:A601:4515:F400:500F:FE6D:5A15:D4ED (talk) 04:44, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Release date[edit]

A release date of September 24, 1991 is currently sourced to the official RHCP website that makes no mention of a release date for the song, but gives this as the release date of its parent album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Previously this article cited a release date of March 10, 1992, with that same source. Earlier, the article gave the release date as October 10, 1991, with no source, and even earlier, March 13, 1992 with no source. Can someone work out a reliably sourced release date? – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 23:47, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Right, trying to find a release date is tricky. According to billboard it had spent 26 weeks on the charts by June 6 1992, which would exclude a march 1992 release date....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:51, 9 November 2016 (UTC) my bad. total weeks is 26 weeks. Apter book obviously says march 1992. if you look in older versions of article. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:57, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, look here which is from this. it is March 1992. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:00, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A standard of sorts[edit]

I said in the TFA that it's "considered a standard of the alternative rock movement of the early and mid-1990s". I figure when this many artists cover a song, it doesn't quite work to say that critics like it; we need something stronger. I'm open to other words. - Dank (push to talk) 02:55, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Chords[edit]

The chord at the end of the verse of this song is NOT an major7 chord. Rather, it is an add14 chord, due to the tuning of the guitar and the fact that the extra note on top of the major triad is two octaves above the root of the chord, not just one, which would have been the major7. 136.49.198.61 (talk) 04:24, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
