[edit]I have today removed the stub marker and added the basic content for this page. More work is needed, but I plan to carry on over the next few days. Don't assume that the red-links need to be created as I haven't searched for equivalent pages for all of them yet, nor have I checked that the blue links link to the correct pages. I suspect that 3D survey and underwater excavation will need new articles. I will also add more external links. However in the mean-time, as ever with wikipedia - please feel free to improve!! Viv Hamilton 22:35, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- I've finished work on the internal links as far as I can. New articles are clearly needed for some topic areas. I will chase up more external references. Please do add to this page! Viv Hamilton 14:42, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
Broken link?
[edit]I've been checking the relevance of the links that were on this page before I started. The following appears broken. Anyone know about it?
Viv Hamilton 08:44, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
- I take it back. The link is now working fine. I've made the description of it more meaningful! Viv Hamilton 09:19, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Merge with Maritime archaeology
[edit]How does one add a merge tag? The maritime article seems better formed, more fleshed out, while this underwater article seems like two lists, one of which is probably covered by a handful of paragraphs in the maritime article. Though I think it should be called Marine archaeology. Xaxafrad 01:42, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Disagree with merging. If you feel the style of this article is too much list-like, by all means flesh it out. If yyou merge the articles we'll end up with one article that is too long, so we'll just have to split an article back out. As and when I've had time I've been adding material to both of these, but there is a long way still to go, so Maritime archaeology will probably need other articles spilt out of it along the way. Archaeology of shipwrecks is an example of an article that was convenient to split out (but still needs more work). As it stands at the moment, Underwater archaeology concentrates on archaeological method - the challenges, benefits and techniques for working underwater. Maritime archaeology is a broader subject - indeed a lot of maritime archaeology isn't even underwater. The maritime archaeology article is more focused on the research questions that archaeology (underwater or otherwise) can answer. Rather than spend time merging the articles, please use your energy to expand them! Viv Hamilton 11:28, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Cleanup list to prose
[edit]I have been changing the format from list to prose and in the process, cleaning up the referencing. In consequence I have removed unreferenced material and cut the external links - which seemed to have reached WP:SPAMHOLE. Viv Hamilton 14:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Remove advertising
[edit]I have edited the newly added section on publishing so that it is consistent with encyclopedic standards. WP is not an advertising media - see WP:NOT and WP:NPOV Viv Hamilton 10:06, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Marine-biased terminology and context
[edit]This article appears skewed toward archaeology in the sea and archaeology of shipwrecks. I actually ended up here while looking into archaeology conducted underwater in lakes, and having nothing to do with a shipwreck. Rock paintings in Finland are largely adjacent to lakes. Underwater archaeology has apparently been important at these sites, producing evidence where next to none was found terrestrially. I'm just saying... Richigi (talk) 18:11, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
- Sure, all that is good and worth including if you can find some reliable sources that we can summarise to write some text from. Go for it. --RexxS (talk) 04:53, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Are you asking for my RS on underwater archaeology in Finland?[1] I'm really only marginally interested in this subject at this time, and don't find myself much inclined to edit this article. If I were inclined, I might look for reliable sources here by searching "underwater excavation lake". The opportunity for expansion is apparently not limited to archaeology in Finland.
