train accident

When I visited the station, I noticed this plaque, remembering the loss of live during an accident. Apparently, engineers in a train noticed they were on a collision course with another train on the same track coming towards them. They managed to slow their train down as much as possible. Their courageous actions seem to have saved many lives but they perished. It should have happened around 1999, but I don't know any names or exact causes or places or whatever, does anyone know more? The accident occurred when an empty GO train was positioning itself for passenger pickup, but struck another GO train which had not vacated the track yet. I think it was in late 1997 or late 1998. I don't recall anybody dying in that accident, though. Mindmatrix 22:29, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
I found this news release from the Transportation Safety Board, which says there was an accident on November 19, 1997. It reports about 50 injuries to passengers on a train bound for Georgetown, but no deaths. There have been other accidents, notably at railway crossings involving vehicles, which have resulted in death, but I don't think any passenger has died as a result of an accident. I'm confused (so, what else is new)

The article says "On July 24, 2003 the City leased Union Station to the Union Pearson Group". Having read the papers and watched the nightly news for the last couple of weeks, I'm hearing that city council agreed to enter into a lease February 3rd [1].

What did they agree to in 2003?. Someone with more knowledge of commercial real estate than I have could perhaps sort this out. -Dhodges 14:21, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Picture request

Union Station's station code is TWO.

The article now states that ‘Union Station's station code is TWO.’ Whose code for the station is this? GO seem to designate it USTN, while VIA Rail call it TRTO. David Arthur 20:16, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Infiltration

I have added this link to the reference section. This may be controversial for, well, a few reasons. However I first became familiar with Ninjalicious through a Toronto Star article on the death of the real person. I will try to find my notes to determine the real name of this person, his publication is on my list of books to buy, so there is some small measure of notability here. Station map

A few years later, finally working on it. (I happened to run across the article for an entirely different reason.) For now, mostly overhauling the Structure section and the pictures (some nice ones in the Commons!); but if I find a legit map, I will add that too. All of the edits today are mine, and many of next week's will be as well. Also temp-storing a few urls here until I can get to them properly. - Tenebris

It would be alright if it were free use (which it is not). We need someone to make a simplified map. I have been working on the Structure section to try and make things clearer, but it definitely isn't enough. --Natural RX 21:52, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Better Picture?

In what way is "Union Station grand hall 7.jpg" a better picture than "UnionStationToronto.jpg"? The former is slightly overexposed and is too washed out. Raysonho (talk) 16:14, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Union Pearson Express

I added a "Union Pearson Express" section under "Passenger services".

Unfortunately, there is also a "Union Pearson Express" section further on under "Future redevelopment plans". This second section seems to give a history of the UPX service itself rather than specifically about Union Station itself. However, the 4th paragraph gives a description of the renovations to the main building which has nothing to do with UPX.

I think this section should be deleted. Editorial advice is welcome.

Don't delete all the information. Some of it provides relevant Union Station info. This is very confusing as you have left it, but I am sure you will be able to consolidate the relevant parts with your recently created new section. Secondarywaltz (talk) 02:45, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

I salvaged some text about the Union Station Revitalization and grouped it into a separate section having that name. This text was interwoven with a early history of the UPX. It seems that someone wanted to start a history of the UPX service but lost interest in completing it. I deleted this incomplete history as a full history is included in the Union Pearson Express article where it belongs. I did salvage the point of opening UPX in time for the Pan-Am Games and included it in the new Union Pearson Express section since it had a usable REF.

Union Station Revitalization

There appears to be 2 sections on this topic:

I have not yet attempted to combine them as my immediate goal was to update text on the Union Pearson Express and separate the Siamese twin (see previous section).

I don't think the article has been updated to reflect the opening of the new York Concourse.

Tracks

Would it be worth mentioning since the platforms are divided between side and island, that 14 of the 16 tracks appear to be for passenger, and two for freight thru-traffic? Is this distinction worth being made in the infobox since the platform distinction is made? Speaking of the platforms, is there a diagram showing the layout of the platforms anywhere? It seems they start counting at three instead of starting from 1, and going to 27, which would mean 24 passenger platforms, right? --Criticalthinker (talk) 07:15, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
