Notability[edit]

Not sure why this is disputed -- it has own industry awards (as stated in article), and was one of the first university radio stations to broadcast freely (i.e. not just via induction loops), again as stated in the article. I don't disagree that the article needs some major copy editing to break it into more logical sections; but this doesn't make the subject notable. -- Ratarsed (talk) 19:30, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a few facts about the original transmission system, from my memory - I helped design, build, and install a lot of it. Really, this is against the rules, but I felt it was more important to correct the factual errors in the article, even though I'm not aware that this stuff has been written up previously. I'm open to do an interview, or assist in creating an external history of the station, if anyone so wishes. As the second British University radio station to be officially licensed, it seems at least as notable as CJSW and CFUV-FM, both of which have articles.

The Post Office regulations were widely thought to be prohibitive - at that time, University radio was officially deprecated. By assigning a low frequency, adjacent to a strong commercial station, and with a requirement that the signal should be too low to be received by ordinary commercial radios outside the campus boundary, the Post Office were setting goals which were not easily met. I recall meeting the Post Office inspectors when they checked us out. Their biggest concern, as I recall, was that we should not make negative comments about the Royal Family. User:dkingsland

Merge with RED_-_1404_AM[edit]

It appears University Radio Essex and Red - 1404 AM are the same radio station / same organisation.

Do these two articles need merging? Maybe someone with better knowledge can provide a more considered answer.
