Name change[edit]

Seal[edit]

Whilst the name on the seal is indeed for Trinity College, the copyright and trademark information of the college indicates it is the seal of the university. Djegan 20:33, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are no sources on the image page to back up that link, but I've found some to show that it is the Trinity seal as opposed to that of the university. Trinity's document on usage of trademarks clearly states that this is the College Seal, distinct from the University Crest and College Crest [1]. Clothes printed with this seal are advertised as having the "College Seal" [2], and circumstantially it appears to be the Trinity College Seal, as opposed to one for the University of Dublin, that is used to validate legal documents [3]. There is, of course, the matter that the seal incorporates the crest and full Latin name of the college and not of the university! --Kwekubo 23:19, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This pdf would appear to conflict the one you linked to, Appendix 1 - College Trademarks (PDF, 55kb) (indeed it does not give any confidence in the supposed TCD/UD split). Can anyone, who is a graduate, and has a university parchment give any information? Djegan 23:31, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way its not unknown for organisations to use outdated seals, for instance the Institution of Engineers of Ireland still maintains, and uses, the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland seal even though that name passed out of use in 1969. Djegan 23:36, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am removing the seal. To contend that it is the seal of the university is ridiculous. Just because some ignorant administrator in a handy 10-4 job has called it the "university" seal does not make it so. The College and the University both have armorial bearings (and not "crests", God save me) granted to them; the College's arms are azure, a bible closed, etc, and the University's arms are quarterly azure and ermine, etc. The seal on this page is nothing but the arms of the College (which consists only of a shield) surrounded by the name of the College in Latin, i.e. the College of the Holy and Undivided, etc. The degrees of the University carry the armorial bearings of the university, i.e. quarterly azure and ermine, first quarter a book open proper, etc, and neither the College's arms nor its "seal". During the early 1990s some degrees were issued with the arms of the College but the Chief Herald of Ireland pointed out the error. Thank you. Peter.
The question is not does the seal incorporate the arms of the college, this is understandable to all as fact. The question is; in practice is the seal that of the college or university? As an extreme example, even if the seal of the university was a half of a potato cut out by a three year old this, in itself, would not invalidate it as the seal of the university if it where already accepted as the seal. I know. But it's not accepted as the seal of the university. In practise, the College and University are often confused. For example, the sports clubs are all "Dublin University" yet they all use the College arms! But the seal is not that of the university, it is not used on anything uniquely University, such as degrees. Peter again.

second external link[edit]

What is the purpose of the second external link (http://www.trinitycollegevisitors.0catch.com/) other than to convince me that some of this individuals accusers may be correct about his paranoia?

What is the purpose of the comment above other than to convince me that it was written by Trinity College? Why was the username or IP address masked, for example, and why is the date and time of the comment not recorded? The purpose of the "second external link" is clear to the thousands of visitors to that site and supporters of the site. The real difficulty the person - or organization - that made the comment seems to have is with a site not full of glowing and fawning praise of Trinity College. Because it lacks these 'essential' qualities the commenter is "convinced" of the site creator's "paranoia". Does this in itself not confirm the commenter's own fear and arrogance? Unfortunate![edit]

It is unfortunate to see such a poor page on University of Dublin. I have a plan to improve this page. I'll follow University of Oxford and University of Cambridge page as a model to improve this one. Initially I'll prepare the following sections:

  • Intro
  • History
  • Reputation
  • Notable Alumni
  • Organization
  • Governance and Administration
  • Degrees and other related stuffs
  • Student Activities
  • Other

History[edit]

I prefer a common separate article on the history of the University of Dublin Trinity College. We can keep the main articles short and redirect the reader to the separate main history article.
