More than one[edit]

As the city of Fribourg in Switzerland is in the French speaking part, Fribourg and not Freiburg would be the correct name. The German University of Freiburg does not use the Albert Ludwigs prefix in English (please check out the university's website and a recent by the university's press office). I have thus decided to move the German University of Freiburg to this location and kept the University of Fribourg as a disambiguation. RoDeWo (talk) 05:19, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move?[edit]

All the ancient German universities include their founders names in the title of their wiki pages (see LMU, Heidelberg, Göttingen etc...). So, for consistency's sake, why not moving back? BTW: I added your two Max Planck Research Schools for International Criminal Law; since they are joint initiatives of MPG and the university (the PhDs are awarded by the university), I'd suggest moving all the MPRS to the grad schools section. best regards from heidelberg Fred Plotz (talk) 15:40, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help, Fred! I would still recommend staying under this title, since the PR department at the university recently published its official guidelines for translation of university-related German terms into English and list the official translation as University of Freiburg.([1]).

Oh, you're welcome, it's not worth mentioning. I was about to move as well weeks ago, but I decided not to do for the reasons mentioned above. Of course, internationally no one knows the full name, and even our merchandising articles do not mention Ruprecht Karl, except for the coat of arms. I'll see what the others do and maybe I'll change my mind. By the way thanks for the flowers, you're doing fine as well. I've developed some kind of "alma mater patriotism" while doing this. More people should do so. If you want to upload official university pictures, you may give your press office a call, and normally they are happy to grant the permission to upload low resolution pics as "own work", at least ours did so. University of Excellence"[edit]

The University of Freiburg itself as well as other universities successful in the third line of funding use the terms "University of Excellence" and "Excellence University" (http://www.pr.uni-freiburg.de/pm/2007/pm.2007-10-19.352), as well as leading politicians such as the head of the BMBF Ms. Schavan herself (http://www.bmbf.de/press/2165.php). Since the term has become common in the general public by means of its extensive use in print and media, it has become a recognizable expression that is tangible to a reader unfamiliar with the excellence initiative or German higher education. "Third line of funding" or "future concept" is an elusive term. As I go on to further explain the lines of funding and the meaning of the phrase used in the title, I do not think that it should be replaced. I have added the line "so-called" and put University of Excellence in quotation marks, to account for the fact that the title is not officially designated as such by the Ministry of Education and Research or the DFG. However, its extensive inofficial use even by exactly these above mentioned authorities and commonplace use in the general public warrant, in my opinion, its use at this position in the article. "Notable Alumni" Gallery[edit]

A few words on the removal of Göbbels from the Alumni Gallery.

The gallery ought to exhibit a range of historical personages who studied at the university. The question one ought to ask oneself is two fold:

1: Did the person in question study/work at the university?

2: Is this a "notable" historical or contemporary personage?

The answer in the case of Göbbels is therefore, Yes and Yes. Now I might be willing to entertain an objection based on the length of time Göbbels was at Freiburg, however, attempts to censor the article based on a very weak objection to the second criterion is unacceptable for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the Gallery is intended for "notable" alumni, not "disguished", "academic genius", or "morally righteous" alumni. As one of the most famous, significant, powerful figures in 20th Century German politics, I think that one can reasonably claim the epithet "notable" to Joseph Göbbels.

Secondly, the attempt to remove him from the gallery represents a very familiar and sadly predictable politicisation of what is supposed to be an objective encyclopedia (or the closest, fairest, most frank and honest attempt possible). I understand that historical figures of the Third Reich provoke strong knee-jerk reactions within Germany, but decisions here ought to be made within the parameters of dispassionate historical analysis.

Thirdly, some of the most heinous individuals, past and present, studied at some of the most august academic institutions in the Western tradition. The idea, that because Göbbels studied in Freiburg or Heidelberg therefore means that those universities' reputations are threatened, strikes me as something a teenager would say, with all due respect. I don't think that moral outrage ought to overwhelm rational reflection, things must be kept in perspective.

Finally, if the mere presence of Göbbels on the alumni gallery were somehow to damage the reputation of those universities (which I don't think will be the case), then that is what must happen. This is an encyclopedia which is supposed to evince factual truth, not a university sales brochure.

Ordinarily I would not object so strongly to a minor edit. However, the nature of the removal worries me, as it seems to indicate a more disturbing systematic and attitudinal problem. We're on the border of censorship!Welshentag (talk) 14:15, 19 September 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Nazi period[edit]
