Crest

Yes the crest may be uncommon but nevertheless it is the offical seal of the university which is the protocal for all university pages to put in their infoboxes. The sketched outline of a tower may be the modern symbol recognized but is not the university seal and does not belong in the box but perhaps in a thumbnail picture box below. ArchonMeld 20:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Where is this protocol? Djegan 22:45, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
By the way I am not absolutely against placing the crest in the infobox, just absolutely against what you first did, which was to remove the corporate logo from the article. Djegan
Perhaps the best option would simply be to switch the positions of the crest and the corporate logo on the page? I note that this is the case with UL - university crest in the info box, corporate logo lower down the page. Incidentally, the university's guidelines for the clock tower logo make it clear that it should not be reproduced on its own, separate from the words "Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh" and "National University of Ireland, Galway" below it; the latin motto "Deo Favente" is rarely used in the absence of the crest.Gustavus 09:12, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
The reason in the UL article is that no one quite knows the status of the corporate logo, it "appeared" on the website in August 2005 last and no press release has been given to explain its significance (nor is their a corressponding presentation or style guide). I emailed the university and they never responded to my query. I will upload the NUIG logo with the name underneath. If people want to change the order of what appears on the page then by all means as long as its with consensus, so already two people against one have suggested such (so their is a consensus to change). Djegan 11:39, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
If anyone can get a better rendering of Image:NUI, Galway.png then by all means upload it. Something not excessively wide but in colour. Djegan 13:11, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
The protocol can be found by looking at the other 100,000 university pages on wikipedia. ArchonMeld 03:04, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
In other words theirs no written policy you can cite, theirfore theirs no "protocol" to distinguish between crest or logo - its not a hard and fast decision, its a consensus issue. Read my comments above, change the order if required. Djegan 08:51, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
What your are calling a crest is in fact a coat-of-arms.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 21:25, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Funny

These lines: "The National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI, Galway) (Irish Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh or OÉ, Gaillimh) is the best university not only in Ireland but all over the world", are the funniest statement I have ever seen on wikipedia. Anyway, I hope people who are working here will make the necessary change soon. (Niaz bd 13:36, 14 February 2007 (UTC))

Notable Alumni

If anyone has any notable alumni to add to make a section of it, can they please add Valentine O'Hara (1875 - 1941), author and authority on Russia and the Baltic States. It doesn't make sense to add a single alumnus! GoScoutUK (talk) 21:32, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

The noteble Alumni section is horrific, could someone please fix it?! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.125.57.161 (talk) 23:54, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

"established under the auspices " of NUIG, single reference http://www.nuigalway.ie/generic/language_toggle.php?language=gaeilge is to NUIG website. Doesnt seem to be a seperate entity Murry1975 (talk) 15:37, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Notable Past Students

Hi, I've respectfully re-added John Hourican, as a notable past student - he had been removed as he doesnt have a wiki entry himself, and so it was felt that he was un-noteworthy. I'd suggest that the absence of a page is in itself not the sole criteria for noteworthyness, and in this case Hourican ranks as a noteworthy UCG grad

Wiki isnt a indiscriminate list or directory, notability for articles is clear. For lists not so, but we should adhere to the fact that any past student would be notable in any profession so it is best practice to only add persons with articles. Murry1975 (talk) 20:06, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

External links modified

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on NUI Galway. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}).

History

In the History section, there is a claim that the Fine Gael youth wing "took a hold on the university in 1973". The source cited to support this is the profile of Young Fine Gael Soc on the NUI Galway website. This page is archived from 2015. This is not a reliable source. This paragraph is irrelevant at best. The source only mentions when the society was founded. 198ralph (talk) 23:23, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

I have reverted your edit as it is sufficiently sourced. The Banner talk 23:26, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
I think anything that discusses the Fine Gael Society should be moved to the section labeled "Societies" under the "Student Life" banner. I think leaving this paragraph as it is violates Wikipedia's policy of having a neutral point of view. 198ralph (talk) 23:44, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
If you want a neutral view, please add other political university-related youth organisations to the overview. The Banner talk 13:54, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
I did move the section to student life, what is indeed a better option. But I removed the tag you placed, as more societies have a link to the university-website. The Banner talk 13:59, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I apologise if I've acted like a hothead 198ralph (talk) 23:46, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Apology accepted. The Banner talk 23:51, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Rename

I've put in a technical request to move NUI Galway to University of Galway on Wikipedia:Requested_moves/Technical_requests - since the second page already exists I can't initiate a simple move - thanks User:Manticore for highlighting that there was another way to do this.
