notable academics

I don't think we need to get into that game, because quite frankly it always winds up with a bunch of randoms who happen to be people's favourite lecturers getting added. If a case can be made for notability- i.e. prodigious research output in top journals (e.g. Nature, Science etc), or elected fellowship of learned societies (e.g. Royal Soc, British Academy, US Academy of Sciences etc) or they are notable for their public outreach work, e.g. as science writers or commentators on national events, then a case could be made for putting them in. With the best will in the world, this is unlikely to extend to a physicist whose papers are 'admittedly of marginal impact'! I have reverted for now, comments appreciated. University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. MEDIA CHANGE

Hey guys, just thought I'd point out that as of this year Portsmouth has a fortnightly newspaper called Pugwash News, of which four pages are the Purple Wednesdays sports and societies section, instead of just Purple Wenesdays Mag as it says here. Its a new set up, which we hope will work! We still have the Pugwash Mag as well, which comes out about five times a year.--148.197.115.149 00:03, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Motto

I note that someone has asked for a citation for the stated motto. There are in fact two probable problems. I have fixed the first, but left the second to others to research and debate.

The first is that the motto is stated as "lucem sequamiir". This is an underwstandable mistranscription. The "u"s in the motto as printed are difficult to tell from "ii" (a double "i"), but if this were the case it would be "liicem seqiimiir", which is celarly wrong. In fact my rather rusty Latin tells me that "lucem sequamur" means something like "We might follow the light". I have therefore changed "sequamiir" to "sequamur".

The second issue is that the motto went with the crest used when the establishment was Portsmouth Polytechnic. I can find no current use of the crest or motto, in which case it may be appropriate to remove it from the box, and possibly add it to the text under a section regarding the establishment's former guises. Since I have not been able to confirm that the motto is no longer in use, I have not acted on this, but leave it to others. SMeeds 13:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I also think it was not spelt correctly as originally put. The city's coat of arms includes the motto "Heaven's light our guide", presumably a reference to maritime navigation, which is obviously somewhat similiar. I can't however find any reference to this being used as the University motto either (I can't remember what the polytechnic's badge looked like!). if no-one's been able to find a cite in the next few days then I'll remove it entirely. I believe the coat of arms you refer to is still used but not frequently. Sporting equipment and my grad certificate (issued this year) have the old coat on it, i haven't really looked in detail for the motto and the certs at my grandparents house, but will check when next there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.135.2.161 (talk) 16:10, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

The University of Portsmouth motto is 'Lucem Sequamur' which means "Follow the light".The motto (and coat of arms) was created in 1992 when the former Polytechnic became a University. It is a variation / acknowledgment of Portsmouth City Council's motto "Heaven's light our guide", since they funded the original college in 1908.--Tomworman (talk) 22:13, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Removed: "Tony McPartland - Internet video sensation and also featured on Friday Night Project" as Internet video sensation with only 264 views on youtube is a bit of an exaggeration.

After a long break I've returned to this article. I've removed a duplicate notable alumna and reordered (alphabetically) the remaining list. I note that there is a "notable alumni" entry (Christian Williams) which is a red link. I have been advised elsewhere that red links are not acceptable in this sort of context so maybe someone else will "be bold" and remove it. Otherwise, I would suggest the addition of two further red links, namely "Ricky Salmon - Radio presenter and voice-over artist" and "Howie Watkins - Television presenter". Long ago I created articles for these two people, which were subsequently removed (at a time when I wasn't active) as "non notable". I think that is hardly justifiable given some of the other names listed here, but that's another story SMeeds (talk) 00:55, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
