User:IbIANTiA has recently expanded the gallery of alumni images in this article. It is now way too long. It's also unnecessary. Wikipedia is not an image repository. Our image use policy explicitly says that "a gallery or cluster of images should not be added so long as there is space for images to be effectively presented adjacent to text" and that is clearly the case here. Thanks for broaching this on the Talk page. I hear your reasonable concern about the length of the article, although I'll point out that the article for Harvard University has 58 images in a gallery of its notable people, and Columbia University has 63 (and it's rated a Good Article). This gallery doesn't have as many images. And as I said in my revert, it's not unusual to see galleries of notable people in Wiki articles for higher ed institutions. This is, I think, because they satisfy the criteria WP:GALLERY lays out for informational, well-crafted galleries, namely that they "illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text" (in this case, we'd have to add quite a bit of text to explain who all the notable alumni are, and placing images adjacent to that text would not be much different than adding a gallery), and "they collectively add to the reader's understanding of the subject" (in this case, the kinds of people Rochester has graduated over the years), and they are "captioned to explain their relevance to the article subject." So, forgive me, but I don't think the issue is as clear-cut as you're presenting it. (But I do appreciate your zeal for the rules!) If you'd like to take a crack at reworking that section to your satisfaction, please feel free. Or if there is a cutoff number of images you have in mind, please let us know. But I don't think the solution here is to have zero images. Thanks. IbIANTiA (talk) 16:09, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
