Ian Watkins[edit]

There is contention that Ian Watkins (Lostprophets) should be removed from Notable Alumni section following his conviction. The definition of Alumnus is simply 'graduate'. On the one hand his musical achievements remain notable and Wiki is not a marketing brochure for the university. The university obviously have the right to not reference him in their own material. Conversely I can see that 'Notable Alumni' is probably intended as a positive role model and criminals may not be listed as Notable Alumni of other universities (I haven't checked). I don't think Ian Watkins is a 'notable' anything. A third rate wannabe pop star from a band few people had ever heard of, achieving temporary infamy through his perversion. Terrorists, as horrific as they are, have a lasting impact on the world. This section of the wiki page is 'Notable Alumni' not 'Good Examples of Notable Alumni', by which I guess you mean positive role models.Pwimageglow (talk) 14:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

He's notable now for the wrong reasons, he was previously notable as a lead singer in a popular band. The university had no problems with him being listed before he was arrested. His study at the university will have no bearing on his criminal activities, so of course he should remain on the list as an 'alumnus' and 'notable'. Sionk (talk) 15:41, 28 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a reason to bar inclusion of him from this article though. This seems like a small conflict of interest if you represent the school. Simply put, he's notable and should be included. The other option is to go the route of over universities and make a page just for its notable people. Then only keep the most famous/well-known on this article and delegate the others to the new page. Typing in "List of (University name here) people" will bring up tons of examples. It is not relevant if Ian Watkins is or is not a good example of a famous alumni. The section is Notable Alumni, Ian Watkins is notable (if not for positive reasons) and thus must be included, as discussed above. Champion150 (talk) 10:45, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Two things come to mind, first he was originally placed on the list of notable alumi by the university [as was]. Secondly the university has above agreed that he is a famous alumni. re: flagged close connection with subject[edit]

No particular conflict of interest, as a new wiki user I'm simply harvesting content already in circulation across Wikipedia and aligning to the University page. I've learnt the institution has had a recent merger so probably good practice to bring the content together (?) Seems to be quite a few existing references to former students. I'm adding independent sources so all should be in good order..? (Amends22 (talk) 16:24, 28 May 2015 (UTC)).[reply]

Rankings and Reputation[edit]

There seems to be an ongoing attempt to delete Cited and Useful information in this section, either for unstated reasons or reasons which appear to be connected with attempts to protect the repuation of this university.
