What is an astrological observatory? I would class U. as an astronomical observatory. Mossig 12:44, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Tycho Brahe used Uraniborg and Stjerneborg to observe space, but the main reason his did this was probably due to his attempts to produce accurate horoscopes. In his age, people considered astronomy and astrology to be the same thing. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 12:07, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
There is a strong argument that it was an astrological observatory, used to test for the celestial influence on weather (astrometeorology). This should be worked into both the Uraniborg article and also into the Tycho Brahe article as a more historically sensitive way to describe Tycho's research program. Proof that it was the most expensive project

I've removed the statement that this was one of history's most expensive science projects. This phrase is squarely in peacock language. The implication, one assumes, is that it is one of the top handful of most expensive projects of all time. But what it says, literally, is that it is in the top 50%. That's Original Research. We don't have nearly complete records about scientific projects. We don't know that, on a per capita basis, the Antikythera wasn't the most expensive scientific project ever. (I'd lay money that it was among them.)

Where the statement begins to pale is comparing the Apollo Program with Uraniborg. The United States was "betting the farm" on being able to get to the moon. It was a matter of huge international prestige. Losing to the Soviet Union would have been strong evidence that democracy was not as viable as communism. It wasn't a matter of money. The issue was whether US industry and science, when put to the test, would prevail. Were the funders of Uraniborg putting anything comparable on the line? Or just money?

To be honest, I'm more interested in why so much money was spent, then the investment immediately discarded. And why the money was spent in the first instance? What were the funders hoping to accomplish? Did Brahe just have them wrapped around his finger? Those are questions whose answers would be fascinating.

General lack of maintenance, and recycling of the building materials by the residents who didn't leave when Tycho did. This is documented in travel literature and in archaeological studies. Woodframe (talk) 20:48, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
