I am trying to develop a bio page for an important but overlooked Mozambican politician Uria Simango. Unfortunately by far the best source is his biography- in Portuguese, plus the on-line press in Mozambique. I have done my best to put in as many English references as possible. The basic facts are hopefully verifiable by non-Portuguese speakers. I translated one quotation (by Marcelino dos Santos) as it is very relevant.

I have made some edits to the FRELIMO page to add references to the Rev. Uria Simango, who served as vice-president of Frelimo from its foundation right up until the death of its leader Mondlane, when he actually took over as president for 2 months. I removed the reference to Simango wanting to simply " replace a white elite by a black elite". Both Simango and the "hardliners" Machel and dos Santos espoused some variant of socialist ideology.
However, Simango can arguably be viewed as more "moderate" than Machel/dos Santos and was secretly liquidated post-1975, after a typically Stalinist recantation and confession. He has in effect been written out of the history of the liberation movement. Nkavandame is a more complex figure, who defected to the Portuguese, unlike Simango. Without a more detailed analysis, it is not helpful to bracket him with Simango. Ditto grouping together the revered Mondlane with Machel and dos Santos, as opposed to Simango. All Mozambican politicians, one way or another, wish to be perceived as heirs to Mondlane. This question would require scrupulous analysis, but the fact that Mondlane kept Simango as his deputy over the entire period 1962-1969, indicates that he was not too unhappy with the prospect.

RE: Mozambican War of Independence

Hiya, thanks for your comments and apologies for the late reply. My PC at home isn't working with wikipedia at the moment so I am on a break of indeterminate length. In answer to your questions, simply Be Bold and make any of the changes you listed, and any others you see fit. Individual users do not "own" articles so there is no need to check with me first, though I appreciate the kindness in you doing so. Enjoy editing! SGGH speak! 20:27, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Mozambican War of Independence

[edit]

Made 3 changes as discussed on SGGH talk page. Added a bried "Aftermath" section at the end. Since I deleted reference to RENAMO pre-1974, I added this brief reference and link to RENAMO and the Mozambican Civil War which followed to clarify their role. I also added a reference to my article on Uria Simango, Mondlane's vice-President. The article refers to a power-struggle after Mondlane's assassination leading to a drastic move to the left: this seems like the best place to refer to him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zambez1a (talkcontribs) 21:53, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Simangoconfession.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
