Threat Track security DBA is VIPRE. Moving forward the company has chosen to identify our brand as VIPRE. All changes will reflect name and title changes and slight content modification in our value proposition and mission statement.

Changes requested: 1) Change the title of the Wiki page from Threat Track Security to VIPRE. Change the gray, static description box from ThreatTrack Security to VIPRE. Change from private company to public company. Change inception date from 2013 to 1994. Change website to www.VIPRE.com 2) Delete the current description 3) Replace the current description with the following: VIPRE is a public American company located in Clearwater, Florida. VIPRE provides a portfolio of cloud based security solutions - including award winning endpoint protection and cloud mail and BUDR products and services. In an effort to deliver a more comprehensive portfolio of advanced security solutions, VIPRE has joined j2 Global, a leader in cloud services and digital media for over 20 years. 4) Under History and products section change ThreatTrack to VIPRE

  • Jasongrantnorton, I can do the move based on one of the reports linked in the article. You're going to have to supply reliable sources for your other wishes, and we're not going to insert the promotional phrases that are found in your suggested text. Good morning- Thanks for the editing notes and guidelines. Regarding sourcing the name changes - The name of the company has changed many times causing some confusion. The company is registered as ThreatTrack Security. However, our DBA is VIPRE. You can see on our website all mention of Threat Track is gone in favor of our DBA, VIPRE. www.VIPRE.com The history is Sunbelt Software, purchased by GFI, name changed to ThreatTrack Security dba VIPRE. Is there any documentation that's common I could provide as a source? Thanks. Jasongrantnorton (talk) 15:06, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jasongrantnorton: See the section I placed at the bottom; thanks for confirming that I was not confusing different companies. Can you clarify one point: did the company split again from GFI and thus legally get refounded, or is it actually legally the successor to Sunbelt Software with a change of name? If the latter, the foundation year in the infobox needs to be the year Sunbelt Software was founded, and CounterSpy and maybe other earlier products should be mentioned in the text; if the former, that's the kind of thing for which a published press release could be used in a pinch, but an independent report in the press would be best (and Bloomberg somewhere in the middle), but we need some sort of reference for that refounding year. In general, we avoid using press releases, and don't use legal documents at all, so what would be most useful is independent reports in the press or the tech blogs. That's also what is used to determine notability as we define it on Wikipedia. I see you have now posted at the deletion discussion; notice the emphasis in my post there and the one following it on independent third-party coverage. (If you haven't been referred to it already, let me point you to our main policy page on reliable sources; and a summary statement with links on notability and the use of reliable sources in determining it is here.) By the way ... You should add a boldfaced "Keep" or "Delete" at the start of your post in the deletion discussion. I'll now "ping" Drmies to see whether he has any added comments and to pick his brains on CounterSpy. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:02, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Good afternoon. Sunbelt Software was purchased by GFI in 2010. GFI spun off a legally Independent Company called ThreatTrack Security in 2013. That's still the legal name today, but we are DBA VIPRE and all of our marketing is branded VIPRE. Counterspy was the first product Sunbelt Software developed and was a precursor to VIPRE. • Jasongrantnorton, I don't understand what you're saying. I don't know what a DBA is. You asked to move the page/rename it, and I did; are you now suggesting that this was incorrect? I find all this very confusing. Drmies (talk) 02:49, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Drmies: He's saying it's "doing business as" VIPRE. Yngvadottir (talk) 05:01, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • OK...so the new title is good? Drmies (talk) 15:13, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
        • Actually, depending of course on the outcome of the AfD, I'm not sure it shouldn't be moved back. It's too early to get a good idea of whether VIPRE will become the proper title under COMMONNAME (and even if it does, I don't see it always capitalized), he says it's just a DBA, and in view of the early history I don't think we should refocus the article to be just about the software. I'm also thinking the CounterSpy article should be redirected here ... if this article is kept. I'd be happier about all of this if I had a sheaf of tech blog reviews to hand, but I'm holding off on further searching pending conclusion of the AfD because people with expertise in software may have a different opinion from me. is something like this ok to source with? A third party blog? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasongrantnorton (talkcontribs) 18:24, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That was helpful, thanks; it led me to a better source that supports the company being referred to as VIPRE. I've now created the Sunbelt Software as a redirect; that will have to be deleted if this article gets deleted as a result of the deletion discussion. Looking for places to link it, I ran into mentions on-wiki with irretrievably broken references. If this article gets kept, I'll be seeing what I can do about replacing those to flesh out the Sunbelt Software-era history. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:45, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

I found a review from 2010 for VIPRE, in addition to various business profile sites saying the company was founded in 1994, not 2013, so I went looking. I found solid sources tracing it to Sunbelt Software, which was founded in 1994 and got acquired in 2010. I am not finding anything solid in 3rd-party sources on the 2013 foundation (however, I have not checked Bloomberg); did the security parts of the company re-split from GFI? I also don't find anything about the renaming of the company to VIPRE; have I missed independent coverage of that? Meanwhile, at CounterSpy (software) we are linking to the archived version of Sunbelt Software's website; possibly something should be redirected somewhere.
