Rename page[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was move.

Rename: Val-d'Or, Quebec → Val-d'Or Per WP:CANSTYLE and WP:PRIMARYUSAGE, this is the primary usage of this name. The only known usage of this name that does not pertain to this city is a small town in Malaysia, which doesn't have the hyphen in it and only gets 35 Google hits. There also appear to be a couple of hotels, one in Belgium and one in South Africa, with the words Val d'Or in their names, but neither one appears all that likely to pass WP:N and even if they did they wouldn't qualify for the title Val(-)d'Or alone. The hyphenated form is already a redirect to this article, and the unhyphenated form probably should be as well — the only page in article space that was linking to that one was Dany Bédar, who's from our Val-d'Or. Either a hatnote or a disambiguation page in the format "Val-d'Or (disambiguation)" should suffice for the Malaysian hamlet. Bearcat (talk) 22:36, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Support. None of the other topics which may have this title are as notable as this one. There's already a dab page which lists this city and Val d'Or, Penang, but as Bearcat indicated, this should probably redirect to the city. I would also set Val d'Or (disambiguation) as a redirect to Val-d'Or (disambiguation) for completeness. Mind matrix 16:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - I also would've oppose on renaming all Canadian cities without province names. A few years ago all of the main article titles is named a Canadian city with a province name. So I would oppose on that as well. Steam5 (talk) 11:10, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

- That's never been true, as the largest cities were always at undisambiguated titles. And even to the extent that it was true, there was never any policy or convention that required it. Canadian geographical articles never had any actual naming convention at all until the consensus of WP:CWNB users adopted the current "undisambiguated whenever possible" convention — prior to that, there was only an untested assumption that our naming convention would match the US one word for word.
