When the script for Star Trek VI was first written, the traitor was to have been Saavik, a character introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry requested a new character be created instead, as Saavik had become a beloved part of the Star Trek universe.
I remember reading in Leonard Nimoy's book I Am Spock that he originally wanted Kirstie Alley to reprise the role of Saavik, but that she declined, and that was the reason for the creation of the new character Valeris.
I distinctly remember the actress in Star Trek VI being addressed as Saavik by the other members of the crew, even though she wasn't played by Kirstie Alley. Was Valeris her first name?
Your recollection is incorrect; she is never referred to as Saavik. You're probably thinking of behind-the-scenes material about the writers' initial idea of using the Saavik character -- which they ultimately decided against. --EEMIV (talk) 11:41, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
