Vegetables are eaten in a variety of ways, as part of main meals and as snacks. Seems kinda self-evident to me.

The difficulty with writing this article is that it is hard to have a world perspective. My view of vegetables is probably quite different from that of a South Sea Islander or a resident of Tierra del Fuego. Vegetables used in Japan and China are little known to me and English language sources concentrate on western type vegetables. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:32, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have added some conversions to the headings with great reluctance because I do not think it an improvement, and it looks dippy. The FAO produces figures for world use in metric tons and none of the other articles I looked at, Potato, Wheat and Apple, had any imperial equivalents. I just added total world productions by crop [1], to provide readers with some sense of relative importance (and I got surprised myself by a few figures, like for garlic or yam). I agree with Cwmhiraeth though: metric tons are standard in the field, and two imperial tons are close enough to metric ton anyway for the purpose of displaying very rough estimations like these ones. I think that it looks OK as it is now. For comparative purposes I'd agree with y'all that no conversion is needed, but readers will want to know how much that is in numbers that they understand. While rather familiar with metric length, volume and weight units, I have no fundamental understanding of hectares, so any value using that unit is absolutely meaningless to me. I have replaced two of the sources mentioned. With regard to the Dictionary of Word Origins, the entries will likely be in alphabetical order so there should be no difficulty in locating the information. In the "Dietary recommendations" section, the sentence "For most vegetables, one serving is equal to 1/2 cup and can be eaten raw or cooked. For leafy greens, such as lettuce and spinach, a single serving is typically a full cup" isn't supported by the Harvard School of Public Health reference.
