Philip Markoff[edit]

Good morning, I am completely new to Wikipedia. I have read the talk page guidelines and believe I am posting in the correct area, but I apologize if I am not.

A few months ago, I deleted Philip Markoff from our list of "notable alumni." I understand now that that was not the correct way to have an item removed, and I apologize for taking that step. I respectfully request the removal of Mr. Markoff's name from the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School page.

We are a very small community, and for Mr. Markoff to be one of two notable alumni (at the time I deleted the information), is off scale. If not for the sensationalizing of his story, his name would not appear on our page, as each high school on Wikipedia does not list every alumnus who has been convicted of murder. That would be a long and sad list to end each Wikipedia entry. Separately, it provides infamy to a person who does not deserve such recognition and re-opens deep wounds for people that are simply trying to find basic district information.

If the original poster is unwilling to remove the entire name, I respectfully request the removal of his crimes from the page for the following reasons:

1) This is a website with reference information about the school, as such, the details of one person's criminal history should not be listed on it. 2) We are a K-12 school, and there is no reason that parents and students who are looking for us should be seeing "murder" and "robbery." 3) Even on Ted Bundy's high school's page, his crimes and victims are not listed.

I appreciate your time in considering our request.

Sincerely, Sondra

  Edit request declined

  • Thank you for your request, and for making the request using the correct procedure. That is much appreciated.
  • Unfortunately, the claim cannot be removed from the article, because a valid source exists for the claim. I was prepared to remove the claim if the sources for it were not valid. In Wikipedia Notable alumni sections, the requirement is that claims be sourced in the original Wikipedia page (in this case, the Phillip Markoff page). On that page, there are three references to the claim that he attended this school. Two of those references are dead links, but the third was still active (I have copied that working reference over to this article for posterity).
  • It's not the school's fault that this person who attended the school went on to commit crimes. Although I understand that the school wishes to distance itself from this unfortunate luck of the draw, items cannot be removed from Wikipedia simply because people don't want others to know about them. Thus, the request is declined.

Philip Markoff[edit]

Good morning, and thank you for your prompt reply. I do understand about not removing the name, and I agree with the reasoning behind the censorship link that was provided.

Is there a consideration for removing the detailed descriptions of his crimes and just listing him as "The Craigslist Killer"?

If not, am I correct in understanding that I can submit detailed descriptions of other notable alumni as long as they meet the requirements of the section?

Thank you for your consideration.

Hello Sondra, and thank you for your question. WP:ALUMNI gives the following guidance for the section:

  1. Adding a prose summary is encouraged.
  2. Entries should be bulleted and have a very brief description of their notability.
  3. Links to articles related to an entry are encouraged.
  4. After a description, state when they graduated or what years they attended.

As is the case with Mr. Markoff, the information which confirms their attendance should be referenced in the subject's home article; those references may be carried over to this article, although that is not strictly required. Any additional information placed in the school's article about the alumni which doesn't exist in the alumni's home article should be referenced here in the school's article. If you would like to expand the alumni section in this way, please feel free to submit edit request proposals which do that here on the talk page. Thank you!
