Questionable assertion[edit]

The assertation that it is questionable whether Lombardi actually ever said, "Winning isn't everything. It's the only thing" is spurious. We know that Lombardi said it. His use of these exact words are recorded for history by several contemporaneous sources including first-hand accounts by his players, by journalists - and by Lombardi himself in a 1968 motivational film, "Second Effort," produced for the business community and featuring Lombardi. The film includes a scene in a stadium press box with actor Ron Masak playing a bumbling salesman and feeding Lombardi the line, "But winning isn't everything." Lombardi responds, "You're absolutely right. Winning isn't everything, I'ts the only thing. Late in his career, Lombardi became somewhat embarrassed by the implications of the quote, and thus began a campaign of revisionism by his admirers and by Lombardi himself. This is where the revised versions of the quote originated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.170.23.26 (talkcontribs) 00:59, 9 June 2005

page 365 of When Pride Still Mattered, Lombardi "... papered the locker room walls with motivational aphorisms.. One of the maxims later came to be regarded as the essence of his philosophy: 'Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.' What exactly he meant by that, indeed whether he believed it or even said it, has been a matter of debate ever since." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.234.33.7 (talk) 17:20, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, two of Lombardi's Packers offered the following explanations: Guard Jerry Kramer says the quote as remembered isn't complete. According to him, Lombardi said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. As long as it's done fairly, squarely, and by the rules." Quarterback Bart Starr reports that Lombardi's actual quote was "Winning isn't everything, but the effort to win is." Kramer and Starr's interviews were featured in a Lombardi documentary film. I'm sure it was either HBO's "Lombardi", or the Lombardi episode of ESPN'S "Sportscentury". Elsquared (talk) 07:21, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Questionable assertion (2)[edit]

Is there any support for the assertion that "The rebuilt Lambeau Field no longer faces the Lombardi Avenue side, but still uses the address as it's more financially beneficial to their bottom line."? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.49.140.221 (talkcontribs) 02:18, 3 February 2006

"Winningest Coach" in Post Season[edit]

A citation is needed for this, if it is going to be presented as a fact. To whomever keeps removing the CN: Please Stop. -JakeApple 22:28, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since we can't agree, I removed the "fact" until someone can repost it with a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.165.145.190 (talkcontribs) 03:05, 11 October 2006

Huuh?[edit]

"Vincent Lombardi was born on June 11, 1913 in Brooklyn to Neapolitan-born father Enrico "Harry" Lombardi (age two)..." Enrico was two when Vince was born?! Clarityfiend 20:36, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quote[edit]

Is the "Lombardi Principle" that "the best defense is a good offense"? 66.19.86.46 (talk) 23:45, 18 April 2009 (UTC) No — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.33.25.56 (talk) 00:33, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

B Class?[edit]

I find it odd that this article is B Class. There is only 1 inline citation. Any other opinions?--Rockfang (talk) 16:11, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention an accurate picture of the actual man would be nice. Redwolf24 (talk) 23:36, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The article needs a lot of work, I added the only free picture I could find, a statue. I want to work on shortening the intro and beefing it up along with adding references.--NortyNort (talk) 23:48, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Lombardi is a hot topic this week and last week on the wfan radio station in new york - which is simulcast on the yes network. Unfortunately, wfan did not put some really tasty references by the lead actor in the contemporary play on Broadway. Also, Mike Francesca is really harping on Lombardi's 9-1 recording in the postseason because of Bill Belicheck's team losing to the Jets. ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.234.33.7 (talk) 18:10, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Books written[edit]

Vince Lombardi never wrote a book as far as I know. Both books, "What It Takes to Be #1: Vince Lombardi on Leadership" and "The Lombardi Rules: 26 Lessons from Vince Lombardi - the World's Greatest Coach" were written by his son Vince Lombardi Jr.--92.206.32.39 (talk) 18:07, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect math?[edit]

I'm not sure if official NFL win percentiles follow different rounding rules or something, but I think the previous one was incorrect. This was the original:

"Lombardi went on to accomplish a 106–34–6 record as head coach (.750, discarding ties as was the NFL policy); and he never suffered a losing season."

I checked multiple times and 106 wins out of a total 146 games is 72.6 percent. (106/146 = 0.7260)

I changed it to a rounded .73, and basing the correction solely on math knowledge, hope I was right in doing so. Please correct if I was mistaken.

It is at 75% (106/140) if you discard ties...as was the NFL policy at the time. 66.202.32.118 (talk) 19:02, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"In a scant nine years as a head coach, Lombardi had a 141-39-4 record..."
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1082142/1/index.htm
The packers played 18 exhibition games from 1959-1961, and 6 preseason games in 1962 according to Maraniss. So that record now looks legit to me. It probably should be at the very least listed in external links

Introduction[edit]

The three constants in Lombardi's life were religion, family and football. Someone please write the introduction. From what I see from featured articles, the introduction is too short. I have an extreme personal bias in that I would like not to see 1959-68 in the introduction, but rather Green Bay Packers (1959-1968), etc. because it is easier to create a table that way. (although I think I do not agree that my wikipedia article on top 50 coaches of all time was wikipedia:NOT - WHATEVER wikipedia:NOT means) 173.52.5.48 (talk) 21:51, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction tag[edit]

Someone has slapped a tag on the introduction of the article. I agree it is really bad. I am not an experienced editor so I have been averse to tackling the introduction. Furthermore, I have begged a couple people to help me with it but I have had no success. And I was told by, what seems to me an experienced editor, that the introduction should be written near, or at the end of the article. This article has made tremendous strides but right now I am stuck in the Bert Bell article and I am really looking into how and why Lombardi came to the Packers. By slapping the, I guess it is a leadinfo template, on the article that particular editor has put pressure on me. Maybe that is a good thing, I do not know.

But I am going to have to ignore it until at least April 16th, and probably until April 23rd. The Green Bay Packer section is very, very, very poorly underdeveloped. The Giant, West Point and St. Cecilia sections looks to need at least a paragraph more. Furthermore, the religious section may have to be wiped out - which I right now would have a problem with.

It seems to be similar to John Madden and Bill Walsh; I've seen worse leads. The usual problem is just the opposite, with the lead being overly detailed. SeaphotoTalk 23:44, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know Sea. There exists no FA, GA article of any legendary coach in American sports (and I can say legendary because this is a discussion page). What you have here is an unbelievably, inexperienced Wikipedia editor trying to get his thing home. 66.234.33.8 (talk) 23:54, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience it's far more commonplace for article leads to be too short. When they're too long it's usually due to an accumulation of news, gossip and trivia by passers-by. Anyway, the tag was more to remind me than anything else: if nobody else does it I'll eventually get round to expanding it myself. Talk page refactored[edit]

It appears that the IP who has put so much time into this article has been using the talk page as a scratch pad, adding to it and deleting from it at will. Talk pages are not supposed to be used like this. More troubling is that other users' comments have been deleted. I have now restored those lost comments from the page history, and moved those of the IP's comments which hadn't been replied to to Talk:Vince Lombardi/to do, which is a better place for such scratchpad content. Please use that page to keep notes and such on the article's direction from now on. Thanks. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 07:22, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Who's "Lawlor"?[edit]

The section, Family life, begins with: "Lawlor introduced Lombardi to his cousin, ...". Who is Lawlor? Other online references say it's Fordham classmate Jim Laylor, but I hesitate to make the edit because most do not seem definitive to me. Article cleanup[edit]

With all due respect to those who admired and loved Lombardi, but this article had a lot of POV text, redlinks, barereflinks, redundancies, and other problems that I have tried to address as best I can, without prejudice to returning to do more. Quis separabit? 04:05, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Who is Smith?[edit]

The article contains this sentence "Smith flourished, becoming an integral part of Lombardi's offense, and was voted a First Team All-Pro for the first time in his career, which was also Lombardi's only season as Redskin head coach." Who Smith was is never addressed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.174.0.229 (talk) 02:21, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Homosexuality Acceptance[edit]

I find it interesting that the section referring to Lombardi's acceptance of gays is 5 paragraphs yet the entire review of his coaching career is 10 paragraphs. I would ask what is more important to Vince Lombardi?... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:603:4300:2987:1CF0:96E0:E7B2:C476 (talk) 06:54, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It shows that Lombardi cared more about treating everyone with dignity and respect than he cared about winning football games. Lombardi was truly a class act. ParkH.Davis (talk) 15:28, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

i didnt know that it shows who he is as a person — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.72.162.76 (talk) 15:43, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
